# 731 - Native American Dollar - Part 1

in SteemLeo4 years ago

Most of the info below came from https://nativeamericandollars.com/

The Native American Dollar coin series launched in 2009 to honor the contributions and accomplishments of Native Americans. Each year, a unique reverse design representing a different theme has been paired with the popular obverse design featuring Sacagawea.

The reverse design for each year is to be emblematic of one important Native American or Native American contribution. To the extent possible, the design themes are to be issued in the chronological order in which the Native Americans lived or the events occurred.

The reverse design for the first year of the program carried an agriculture theme. Agriculture had played an important part in Native American culture as they sought to live with the land and understand the surrounding natural resources. The Native Americans would share their knowledge of agriculture with Europeans when they arrived in the New World, helping to ensure their survival.

Proof coins were also minted and this is the scope of this series. All are PF-70 UC graded by NGC. As with all modern proof coinage, the coins feature a cameo finish with frosted raised design elements and mirrored background fields.

The coins were made of 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese and 2% Nickel and their weight is 8.1g.

NGC graded 9,917 2009 $1 "Agriculture" Proofs, with 2,483 as PF-70 UC. 2,179,867 coins were minted in San Francisco.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $31.00 and today's price is around $60.00.

The “Three Sisters” method of planting is depicted on the reverse of the 2009 Native American Dollar. A woman is shown planting seeds in a field of beans, corn, and squash. The productivity of each plant was increased by growing together within the same plot. The corn stalks provided support for the bean vines, which added nitrogen to the soil. The squash provided ground cover, reducing weeds.

The reverse was designed by Norm Nemeth.

The obverse design, featuring the portrait of Sacagawea and child, was designed by Glenna Goodacre.

Ahhh... yes, the system of symbiotic agriculture! The Three Sisters is a combination of three plants working together:

Sister bean fixes, or makes available in plant form, nitrogen from the air. Sister corn provides the support for Sister Bean’s trailing vine. Sister squash provides ground cover to hold moisture and maintain healthy soil environment while deterring animal invaders with its spiny stems. The fourth sister can be Sister Sunflower or Sister Bee Balm (aka Bergamot, Horsemint and Oswego Tea). This sister supports the beans, lures birds from the corn with her seeds, and attracts insect pollinators.
