Our plan on our road trip along South Africa's coast from Cape Town, was to reach Cape Agulhus on our first day. A lovely day trip along the coast with a stop in a couple of small towns before we reached Cape Agulhas, where we spent the night. The next day we drove into the country through a couple of South Africa's famous wine regions.

Bettys Bay is a small town along a coast where little penguins live. I don't what kind, but quite small. We stopped and parked at a cafe where we took a break. We took the time to visit an old whale factory, which today function as a museum. From 1913 to 1936 this building housed a factory used as a slaughter house for whales. Back in 1913 there was nothing here. No houses and not even a road from Cape Town. When the factory was built, the workers arrived by boat. On a board telling the story of the factory we read that during the whaling season, employees from Norway were working together with Afrikaans. Quite an interesting little detail for us as Norwegians.

Hermanus, a small fishing village was our next stop. Another small town with a few thousand inhabitants. But really nice and with lots of places to eat, so it's clear that it's a tourist spot. We soon found out what makes the city attractive to tourists - whale spotting. In the period from June to December, whales pass in large numbers just outside the city. However, we did not see any whales, although we scouted out to sea for a long time. But a trip down to the old harbour, which is partly up a mountainside, gave a good impression of the town's history linked to fishing.

The road is leading us through farmland and completely different from the rocky coastline where we started our journey.

Late in the afternoon we arrive at Cape Agulhas. We were going to spend the night here. The hostess at the guest house recommended that we drove straight down to the lighthouse and the Agulhas National Park before having dinner. So we drove straight down to the lighthouse and took a walk to the southernmost point on the African continent. This is where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. Several sunken ships lie along the coast. The sea is treacherous and not suitable for anchorage.

The next day we got up early to continue inland to two of the country's famous wine regions - Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Wonderful mountain scenery and vines as far as the eye can see. Beautiful South-Africa.
