Hello Steemit People's!
I hope you are all well.
The Amazing Benefits Of Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums are a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. They are native to eastern Asia, mainly east China, Japan, Korea, and southeast Russia. Nine species make up this genus which consists of herbaceous perennial flowering plants that grow anywhere from 8-120 cm tall. The most common types grown commercially include white-flowered 'Shirley Poppies' and red florets 'Kashmir Double Mix'.
Chrysanthemums have been used for decades as ornamental plant in gardens. In recent years they have also become well known for their medicinal properties including anti-inflammatory effects on arthritis sufferers when applied topically or taken orally in tea form. It is important to note that this study has only been confirmed in mice and human trials are still needed.
Chrysanthemums more specifically the species called Mums, also have antioxidant properties. One plant contains more than five different types of antioxidants which can reduce cell damage throughout the body and more specifically in the brain due to its high oxygen demand.
Interesting Fact about Chrysanthemum:
Chrysanthemum indicium, or Indian chrysanthemum, was introduced to European flower markets in the 17th century. After one hundred years of cultivation it became an important part of cut flower arrangements throughout Europe. By 1680, the plant had traveled to China and Japan where it continues to be cultivated for its medicinal benefits (> Chrysanthemum Indicum).
Why are they so amazing
First known as a symbol of happiness in China, chrysanthemums have historically been used to rid the air of bad odors, had five points for each stem resembling Shiva's hands and feet, were thought to ward off disease-causing demons, had medicinal value and were often given as gifts to celebrate a variety of events including, but not limited to: birthdays, weddings, holidays and the fall harvest season.
How to care for them:
Growing chrysanthemums is easy with proper growing conditions. They need full sun exposure most of the day, although they will tolerate some shade and they do best when planted in well-drained and slightly acidic soil. Chrysanthemums can be fertilized once a month to encourage new growth and flowering with water soluble fertilizer that is balanced (like 10-10-10 or 14 -14-14) but we recommend call your local garden center for specific recommendations as soils vary across the United States.
Where can I find one near me?
Chrysanthemums are most often grown in the United States in the Midwest and East Coast, but you may be surprised to learn that they are actually native to Eastern Asia including Japan, Korea and eastern Russia. They were brought over by Dutch traders in the 17th century who also brought the plants to European countries like England and France.
