SteemFoods Contest -6- | Promote A Traditional Food! | "Aappa" - Sri Lankan Hoppers
Hi Steemit food lovers,
After quarantine lockdown lifted, I was quite busy with my salon work. However, I saw this contest and wanted to make something to promote Sri Lankan Traditional Food.
From ancient times, Rice is the main food in Sri Lanka. That being so there are many types of food with rice being the main ingredient in our daily cuisine. Today recipe has no exception and we call it ආප්ප - Aappa “Hoppers”. It’s a type of pancake.
Hoppers believed to be originated in Kerala India and Sri Lanka. In some of our traditional food we see some Indian influence. Recently, hoppers came into the political controversies as well. There is a 'Hopper Theory' now used in many political debates.
Prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa enjoying hoppers while Former president waiting for his chance 😄
That’s how much this meal popular and you can find it in any restaurant or hotel in Sri Lanka. The meal with hoppers is not that expensive in local restaurants. However price can be range according to the food experience you want. There are various types of Hoppers available in different regions, for example, Plain hoppers & Egg hoppers are the most famous variety while northerners love milk hoppers, as a kid I loved honey hoppers or trickle hoppers and still remember the taste of it.
Hopper experience at Waters Edge - 5 Star Hotel in Sri Lanka
Let’s see how we can prepare hoppers,
Ingredients
- Red rice 500g
- Coconut water
- Sugar 01 teaspoon
- Water 200ml
- Coconut milk 400ml
- 01 Egg
- Salt as per your taste
- Baker’s Yeast 4g
Step 01
Wash Rice properly and soaked it for 7-8 hours. Usually, I prepare hoppers for the dinner. The entire cooking process takes about 24hours. So you have to do this day before the night from the cooking date.
Step 02
In the morning strain the rice through a strainer.
Step 03
Add rice little by little with coconut water and coconut milk and then blend well.
Step 04
Add salt, an egg, sugar, and yeast to the prepared mixture. Then cover and keep it aside for the entire afternoon for fermenting. Make sure not to open and check the mixture meanwhile. It has to be closed at least for 06 hours.
Step 05
After 06 hours you can check the mixture and it should be fermented correctly. If the mixture rises and double up you can say it is fully fermented.
Step 06
Take a nonstick pan heat on a low flame and rub a little oil on it.
Step 07
Put a little of the hopper mixture into the pan and stir around.
Step 08
Then close the lid and turn the heat to low to bake the hopper for 2 minutes.
Step 09
Continue the cooking process while spooning the mixture well.
🌸🌸 I’m ready to serve 🌸🌸
See you again with another Recipe!
Good Bye!
