Richard era quince años menor que Matías, había nacido después del cambio de sector, cuando por la llegada de los últimos refugiados de Europa se había activado un nuevo sector, mejor acondicionado para los miembros de la clase alta de Titán, y así poder dejar todo el bloque inicial de viviendas a los refugiados, mientras que los restantes pobladores nativos de la colonia, permanecían en las áreas residenciales comunes.

Su madre, Alicia Salgado, era la principal accionista de Vortix un conglomerado de industrias que había sido el producto de la fusión, cuatro generaciones atrás, de tres empresas farmacéuticas y de equipamiento médico de alta tecnología, originalmente situadas en Marte. Leonardo Salgado el tátara abuelo de Alicia y para entonces empresario del sector bancario, logró hacerse de las acciones de estas empresas y así apropiarse de su tecnología, que usaría para renovar una antigua empresa familiar del mismo sector, con sede en Europa, así nacería Vortix, que con el tiempo sería la mayor proveedora de equipamiento médico para Europa y luego Titán.

Su padre, Víctor Ortega era el hijo de un conocido empresario de los alimentos, cuando él y Alicia contrajeron matrimonio, los tabloides de Titán, circularon que se trataba de una boda arreglada, pues nunca se supo que los jóvenes siquiera se conocieran antes del evento. El tiempo y los frecuentes distanciamientos de la pareja confirmaría esta teoría ante la opinión pública.

Matías nació dos años después de la boda y sería criado principalmente por su madre y una legión de tutores e instructores privados, para que en algún momento se hiciera cargo de la empresa que, tras la muerte de su abuelo, sería heredada por su madre y luego por él. Mientras crecía, su padre con el apoyo de su abuelo, se encargaría de la gerencia de Vortix, manteniéndose la mayor parte del tiempo alejado de la casa de la familia.

Para el momento del nacimiento de Richard, Matías ya había cumplido los quince años y estaba por concluir la escuela secundaria. Su padre, tras la muerte de su abuelo, se encargaría definitivamente de todos los negocios de la familia, y durante sus primeros años, el niño creció bajo la sombra del rumor, de que el matrimonio de sus padres no era más que una farsa y que él era el producto de un desliz de su madre con un sujeto desconocido.

Víctor siempre se mantuvo distante de Richard, quien no solía separarse de su madre, más aún cuando su hermano se marchó a la universidad, mucho se habló en los tabloides sobre la relación de los hermanos, siempre rumorando la posible existencia de tensiones entre ellos, sin embargo, esto siempre estuvo alejado de la realidad. Si bien durante sus años de universidad, Matías se distanciaría de su madre, siempre se mantendría apegado a su hermano, se sabía que durante las cortas temporadas que estaban juntos, parecían ser muy unidos, a pesar de la diferencia de edades.

Alicia moriría cuando Richard tenía apenas siete años, no se hizo publico el motivo de su fallecimiento, pero se rumoró que se trató de una aneurisma no diagnosticada. Richard quedó bajo la tutela de Matías, quien ya había completado la universidad y se había empezado a desempeñar como ejecutivo de Vortix; para el momento de la muerte de Alicia, Víctor ya había abandonado definitivamente la casa de la familia y vivía en otra propiedad, completamente distanciado de sus hijos y esposa.

Richard, a diferencia de Matías, no parecía tener el más mínimo interés por los negocios de la familia, dedicando sus años de escuela a los deportes además de mostrar un gran interés por la música, en sus años de juventud se metió en varios problemas con la ley, de los que su hermano debió sacarlo, haciéndose responsable monetariamente de algunos destrozos provocados por las fechorías de su hermano y amigos.

Cuando cumplió los cuarenta años, Matías, con el apoyo de los restantes accionistas, asumió la presidencia de Vortix, removiendo a su padre del cargo y desplazándolo a una posición ejecutiva menor, de la cual terminaría dimitiendo, para retirarse finalmente de las empresas.

Mientras Matías se hacía cargo de Vortix, Richard, que tras terminar la secundaría decidió darse una pausa, que ya llevaba cinco años, antes de entrar a la universidad, dedicaba su tiempo a diferentes actividades, que compartía con un pequeño grupo de amigos, dentro de los que se encontraba Shinju Fujimori, una linda joven del bloque de residencias comunes, con quien se decía, mantenía un romance. Fue durante una excursión, a uno de los lagos de metano para acampar y practicar el vuelo, que Richard perdió la vida que conocía y a su hermano con ella.

―Según los registros de la colonia, Matías Ortega, fue el presidente de Vortix, durante treinta y dos años, eso fue antes del inicio del viaje de la Elpis ―explicó OLIMPIA, a un incrédulo y angustiado Richard.

―Pero, ¿qué pasó con él?, ¿abordó la Elpis? ―preguntó.

―Matías Ortega, murió diez años antes del inicio del viaje, fue uno de los fallecidos durante la epidemia del Prion ALBUS, tanto él, cómo su familia, perecieron por la infección.

― No puede ser, eso ocurrió aun antes de salir de Titán, Matías tuvo una familia, yo nunca le llegue a conocer ni siquiera una novia ―dijo Richard, con voz temblorosa.

―Si, según los registros, se casó a los cuarenta y dos años, con una de sus asistentes en Vortix, una dama diecisiete años menor que él, juntos tuvieron tres hijos, dos niñas y un niño ―explicó OLIMPIA.

―No recuerdo nada de eso, es como si nunca los hubiera conocido, y el pillo de Matías se casó con una chica más o menos de mi edad quien lo diría … ―sonrió, Richard, con sus ojos humedecidos por las lágrimas ―. Pero, ¿qué paso conmigo?, ¿cómo llegué aquí?, ¿por qué no puedo recordar nada de eso?.

―Usted Richard, nunca llegó a conocer a la esposa e hijos de su hermano, según los registros de la colonia, falleció en un accidente, durante una excursión al Lago Mayor, a treinta kilómetros de la colonia de Titán ―dijo OLIMPIA, para el asombro de Richard.

―¿Cómo que fallecí?, pero si estoy aquí, ¡eso no es posible! ―exclamó Richard, sorprendido.

―Fue declarado como fallecido, a pesar de varios recursos legales interpuestos por su hermano, diez años después del accidente.

―No entiendo, ¿cómo que fui declarado fallecido diez años después? …

―Después del accidente, sus condiciones no eran compatibles con la vida, los daños en su cuerpo eran irreparables y su hermano decidió incluirlo en un programa experimental de Vortix, que pretendía mantener en estando de hibernación criogénica a personas cuya condición médica era crítica y no podía ser mejorada por los medios disponibles para el momento ―explicó OLIMPIA ―. Este programa continuó después de la muerte de su hermano e incluyó a cincuenta y ocho pacientes, dentro de los cuales por mandato de su hermano fue catalogado como prioridad Alfa, el más importante a ser reanimado. Tal parece que su hermano se negó siempre a perderlo.

―Matías siempre fue más un padre, que un hermano para mí ―dijo Richard, claramente afectado ―. Nuestro padre jamás se interesó en nosotros, lo único que le importaba en las empresas y después de la muerte de nuestra madre fue él quien se hizo cargo de mí, aunque no estaba todo el tiempo a mi lado como mi madre lo hacía, siempre estuvo cuando lo necesite.

―Antes de su fallecimiento, su hermano, que ya sabía de la construcción de la Elpis, siendo el programa un secreto de Vortix, dejó definido que la empresa debería suspender el programa sólo antes de la partida de la nave, pero que los participantes, serían embarcados en un container especial y se configuraría un ASCLEPIO para que, a la llegada a destino de la nave, se iniciara la reanimación de aquellos pacientes que, según los avances a los que se hubiese llegado durante el viaje, pudieran ser rehabilitado.

―Entonces yo fui uno de los reanimados ―comentó Richard.

―De hecho, es el único reanimado con éxito, fue el tercero de seis pacientes desahuciados que intentaron ser reanimados, lo que vio, hace un momento, fue al ASCLEPIO, tratando de reanimar, sin éxito, al sexto, un hombre que fue arrollado por un cargador de rocas de las minas de Titán ―explicó OLIMPIA, con su habitual, e inalterable expresión, dibujada sobre su panel facial ―. Así fue como llegó a esta nave, el ASCLEPIO, se mantuvo apegado a sus instrucciones, sin importar los acontecimientos que aquí sucedieron.

Richard was fifteen years younger than Matthias, he had been born after the change of sector, when due to the arrival of the last refugees from Europe a new sector had been activated, better conditioned for the members of the upper class of Titan, and thus be able to leave all the initial block of housing to the refugees, while the remaining native inhabitants of the colony, remained in the common residential areas.

His mother, Alicia Salgado, was the main shareholder of Vortix, an industrial conglomerate that had been the product of the merger, four generations ago, of three pharmaceutical and high-tech medical equipment companies originally located on Mars. Leonardo Salgado, Alicia's great-great-grandfather and by then a businessman in the banking sector, managed to get hold of the shares of these companies and thus appropriate their technology, which he would use to renew an old family business in the same sector, based in Europe, and thus Vortix would be born, which would eventually be the largest supplier of medical equipment for Europe and later Titan.

His father, Victor Ortega, was the son of a well-known food entrepreneur. When he and Alicia got married, the tabloids of Titan circulated the version that it was an arranged wedding, since it was never known that the young people even knew each other before the event. Time and the frequent distancing of the couple would confirm this theory to the public.

Matías was born two years after the wedding and would be raised mainly by his mother and a legion of private tutors and instructors, so that at some point he would take over the company that, after his grandfather's death, would be inherited by his mother and then by him. As he grew up, his father, with his grandfather's support, would take over the management of Vortix, staying away from the family home most of the time.

By the time of Richard's birth, Matias had turned fifteen and was about to finish high school. His father, after the death of his grandfather, would definitely take over all the family business, and during his first years, the boy grew up under the shadow of the rumour that his parents' marriage was nothing but a sham and that he was the product of a slip of his mother with an unknown subject.

Victor always remained distant from Richard, who was not used to separating from his mother, even more so when his brother went off to university, much was said in the tabloids about the brothers' relationship, always rumouring the possible existence of tensions between them, however, this was always far from reality. Even though during his university years, Matías would distance himself from his mother, he would always remain attached to his brother. It was known that during the short periods they were together, they seemed to be very close, despite the age difference.

Alicia would die when Richard was only seven years old. The reason for his death was not made public, but it was rumored that it was an undiagnosed aneurysm. Richard was left under the tutelage of Matias, who had already completed university and had begun working as an executive for Vortix. By the time of Alicia's death, Victor had left the family home for good and was living in another property, completely estranged from his children and wife.

Richard, unlike Matias, did not seem to have the slightest interest in the family business, devoting his school years to sports in addition to showing great interest in music, in his youth he got into several problems with the law, from which his brother had to get him out, becoming financially responsible for some damage caused by the misdeeds of his brother and friends.

When he turned forty, Matías, with the support of the remaining shareholders, assumed the presidency of Vortix, removing his father from office and moving him to a lower executive position, from which he would end up resigning, to finally retire from the companies.

While Matías was taking charge of Vortix, Richard, who after finishing high school, decided to take a break, which he had already done for five years, before entering university. He dedicated his time to different activities, which he shared with a small group of friends, among whom was Shinju Fujimori, a pretty young woman from the common residence block, with whom he was said to be having an affair. It was during an excursion to one of the methane lakes for camping and flying practice that Richard lost the life he knew and his brother with it.

-According to the records of the colony, Matías Ortega, was the president of Vortix, for thirty-two years, that was before the beginning of the Elpis' journey, -explained OLYMPIA, to an incredulous and distressed Richard.

-But what happened to him? Did he board the Elpis? -he asked.

-Matías Ortega, died ten years before the start of the trip, was one of those who died during the Prion ALBUS epidemic, both he and his family perished from the infection.

-It can't be, that happened even before he left Titan. Matías had a family, I never even met him, not even a girlfriend - said Richard, with a trembling voice.

-If, according to the records, he married at the age of forty-two, to one of his assistants in Vortix, a lady seventeen years his junior, together they had three children, two girls and a boy - explained OLYMPIA.

-I don't remember any of that, it's as if I'd never met them, and the rascal Matias married a girl about my age who would say so ..." smiled Richard, his eyes wet with tears -. But what happened to me? How did I get here?. Why can't I remember any of it?

-You, Richard, never knew your brother's wife and children, according to the records of the colony, you died in an accident during a trip to Lake Mayor, thirty kilometers from the colony of Titan, -said OLYMPIA, to Richard's astonishment.

-What do you mean I died, but if I am here, that is not possible! -exclaimed Richard, surprised.

-You were declared dead, despite several legal appeals by your brother, ten years after the accident.

-I don't understand, how was I declared dead ten years later?

-After the accident, your conditions were not compatible with life, the damage to your body was irreparable and your brother decided to include you in an experimental program of Vortix, which was intended to keep in cryogenic hibernation people whose medical condition was critical and could not be bettered by the means available at the time - explained OLIMPIA -. This program continued after his brother's death and included fifty-eight patients, among whom by your brother's mandate you was classified as Alpha priority, the most important to be resuscitated. It seems that your brother always refused to lose you.

-Matias was always more of a father than a brother to me, -said Richard, clearly affected-.Our father was never interested in us, the only thing that mattered to him in the companies and after the death of our mother was Matias who took care of me, although he was not all the time by my side as my mother did, he was always there when I needed him.

-Before her death, your brother, who already knew about the construction of the Elpis, being the program a secret of Vortix, left defined that the company should suspend the program only before the departure of the ship, but that the participants, would be embarked in a special container and an ASCLEPIO would be configured so that, at the arrival to the destination of the ship, the reanimation of those patients that, according to the advances that had been reached during the trip, could be rehabilitated would begin.

-Then I was one of those resuscitated, -said Richard.

-In fact, you are the only one who was successfully resuscitated, you were the third of six terminally ill patients who tried to be resuscitated, what you saw, a moment ago, was the ASCLEPH, trying to resuscitate, without success, the sixth, a man who was run over by a loader of rocks from the Titan mines, -explained OLYMPIA, with her usual, unaltered expression drawn on her facial panel-. That is how you came to this ship, the ASCLEPIO, remained attached to its instructions, no matter what events took place here.
