Greetings to everyone in the steem4nigeria community. I welcome you all to my entry for the "Opportunity comes but Once" contest by @lhorgic.

INTRODUCTION

It is a prominent saying that Opportunity knocks only once, whereas temptations lean on the doorbell. However, people choose to interpret it as "Opportunity comes but once". In truth, opportunities don't often come to us every day, but I wouldn't say it comes only once.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

“Opportunity comes but once"

By this statement, you mean to tell me, we've all got just one chance to succeed or fail in any area of our life. Opportunities are those chances we get to make decisions that impact our lives, be they positively or negatively.

Opportunity on its own is not a singular word, thus, in its plural form is opportunities, signifying its multiplicity.

There are innumerable amount of opportunities in a lifetime. But certain opportunities come but once. What this means is that the timing for capitalizing on something is relatively exclusive, and if it is forfeited, that chance may never materialize again.

I believe that opportunity is ever-present. It may not often be at your door knocking, but it is often within a short distance, better yet, down at the corner.

What is needed of us to do is to put in the work so we can take advantage of the opportunities that come to us, both the obvious ones and those which are not quite so obvious like the temptations.

The temptations are not more or less popular than opportunities.

It is only that opportunities seem to be hard work whereas temptations look more or less like a stroll in the park, thus, this is only a matter of one's viewpoint.

The real challenge with opportunities is the ability and preparedness to take advantage of the opportunities more often than we seem to take advantage of the temptations which may be slightly more difficult.

I believe that by putting the extra effort, we can learn to do a decent job at not only noticing opportunities but acting on the opportunities of our interest. Furthermore, I believe that we can learn ways of seeing a limited number of temptations, and act less impulsive on our urges.

Not every opportunity we see is an opportunity, most of them are temptations, out of personal urge. There are plenty of ways one can apply to reduce and maybe even defeat these various temptations of which being in the company of good friends is a prominent one as good friends will push and advise you away from temptations.

on the other hand, there are a ton of opportunities, but the big question is can you hear them knocking? Can you get up and answer the door when opportunities come knocking? Will you be willing to check the front lawn and maybe to the next corner?

There is a saying that there is nothing more expensive than a missed opportunity, but I believe that maximising a temptation which is camouflaged as an opportunity is even more expensive.

Don’t forgo what you most need in life for something you wish you had now.

Always seek to do the right thing, and not what is easy.

CONCLUSION

"Opportunity comes but once" is perhaps one of the Biggest and Most familiar lies ever told or I have listened to since I was born. Nevertheless, I still hear people say this quote today but in a way it suits them. This influential lie has made people desperate for things they had no idea about. Particularly when it has to do with riches and fame.
