Giorno undici.
Cara mamma, attendo ancora la tua lettera per essere conscio dei vostri sentimenti, per avere conferma che la mia epistola vi sia giunta e l’abbiate letta e compreso le mie sensazioni in questo frangente della mia vita. Ho perso tutto in così poco tempo, vorrei che il nostro rapporto non si smarrisse. Cercherò di mantenere la nostra corrispondenza a cadenza settimanale nella speranza che la nostra famiglia possa rimanere unita, anche se a distanza, perché l’amore innato che proviamo gli uni verso gli altri dicono sia in grado di superare ogni barriera, nello spazio e nel tempo. Mi auguro che papà ti sia rimasto vicino perché ora più che mai dovete sostenervi a vicenda.
Io sto meglio, doloroso ammetterlo ma mi sto ambientando, sto ingranando nella grossa macchina della prigione; ho stretto un legame con il mio compagno di cella che è un veterano di questa struttura, mi sostiene e mi protegge in questo luogo e in cambio gli offro un orecchio e una spalla per poter confidarsi senza essere giudicato, senza essere attaccato mostrando la sua debolezza, la sua umanità. Qui dentro più mostri la tua anima più cercano di strappartela dal petto, è difficile mantenere la propria integrità, la propria persona, diventi un ingranaggio del sistema duro e freddo; ma io non mi piegherò alle loro regole, io manterrò me stesso perché voi possiate riavere il vostro bambino, perché Jeff possa riavere il suo amato, perché la società non mi possa voltare le spalle quando viene a contatto con il carattere da detenuto che si può paragonare a quello di un animale sulla difensiva.
L’amministrazione è rigida qui dentro. Ti svegliano presto e altrettanto presto ti impongono il sonno; ti danno due pasti al giorno, il pranzo e la cena, e devi fare in modo di farteli bastare o essere furbo e cercare di trafugare un po’ di cibo e consumarlo in cella, senza che una delle guardie o un detenuto se ne accorga; ci concedono un’ora d’aria dopo il pranzo non tanto per smaltire il rancio, quanto per mantenerci in salute perché una mente sana necessita di un corpo sano, e non vogliono che qualcuno qui dentro possa impazzire.
Gli altri detenuti mi spaventano non poco, per fortuna il mio compagno di cella mi dà man forte per affrontare i loro sguardi truci. Senza di lui sarei sbranato, ma non devi tenere mamma, ho le spalle protette. Imparerò a non farmi assorbire dalla vita di prigione, ad essere migliore per tornare integro tra le vostre braccia.
Non temere per il tuo bambino, perché è cresciuto e diventato uomo.

I have lost everything in such a short time, I wish our relationship would not get lost. I will try to keep our correspondence on a weekly basis in the hope that our family will remain united, even if at a distance, because the innate love we feel towards each other says it is able to overcome every barrier, in space and time. I hope that Dad stayed close to you because now more than ever you have to support each other.
I am better, painful to admit it but I am settling in, I am engaging in the big prison machine; I have made a bond with my cellmate who is a veteran of this structure, supports me and protects me in this place and in return I offer him an ear and a shoulder to be able to confide in him without being judged, without being attacked showing his weakness , his humanity. Here in more monsters your soul the more they try to tear it from your chest, it is difficult to maintain your integrity, your person, you become a gear of the hard and cold system; but I won't bow to their rules, I will keep myself so you can get your baby back, Jeff can get his beloved back, so that society can't turn its back on me when it comes in contact with the detainee character that you can compare to that of an animal on the defensive.
Administration is rigid in here. They wake you up early and just as soon they force you to sleep; they give you two meals a day, lunch and dinner, and you have to make sure you are good enough or be smart and try to steal some food and consume it in the cell, without one of the guards or a prisoner noticing; they give us an hour of air after lunch not so much to dispose of the ration, but to keep us healthy because a healthy mind needs a healthy body, and they don't want anyone in here to go crazy.
The other prisoners frighten me a lot, luckily my cellmate gives me a hand to face their grim looks. Without him I would be torn to pieces, but you don't have to keep mom, my shoulders are protected. I will learn not to get absorbed by prison life, to be better to return intact in your arms.
