The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is an action-adventure video game developed by Konami and released for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom in 1991. Countries outside Japan got it in 1992. In Japan, it is known as Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyūshutsu Emaki.

This underrated hidden gem is some kind of a fusion of a 2-D platformer with an overhead action-RPG style. What's more is that 2 player co-op is available. It is actually fun!

The Story

In the village of Horo-Horo, a curse has struck them as their princess has disappeared. Without her protective powers, a swarm of giant locusts will destroy the village. The fate of the village rests on two ninja guardians, Kid Ying and Dr. Yang. Kid Ying is a daring young ninja who rides a psychedelic tiger and defeats opponents with ease. Dr. Yang is his mentor, who has mastered the invincible art of spirit transformation. Together, they must navigate through ten challenging levels of the Dragonbeast to find the princess and save the village from destruction.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics of the game are top-notch, especially considering it was released early on in the Super Nintendo's lifespan. The game's anime cartoony style fits perfectly with its silly nature, and the facial expressions of characters during combat add a fun element to the game. The backgrounds are also wonderfully colored and highly detailed, adding to the immersive experience.

The sound is well-designed and complements the game's Japanese-inspired theme. The quirky sound effects match the game's lighthearted tone, and the Japanese-inspired soundtrack creates an immersive atmosphere. The sound effects, including the amusing squeals of Kid Ying and Dr. Yang when they are hit, add to the game's comedic charm. Overall, the sound is a strong aspect of the game and enhances the gameplay experience.

The Gameplay

The game is a unique side-scroller that stands out from others in the genre. It's difficult to pinpoint which game it's most similar to, but it could be described as a blend of Double Dragon and a typical 2D Mario game. In the towns, the game uses an overhead view and players can purchase items. When entering a level, the game switches to a typical side-scrolling view with no flying. Despite its quirks and silliness, the game is ultimately fun to play.

The game consists of 10 levels, and the overall difficulty level is relatively easy. While the boss on level 6 and level 8 may provide some challenge, the game is mostly straightforward and accessible.

The game has a great replay value, featuring many mini-games such as a hockey game resembling Pong, a breakout-like game, a maze with items to find, a shooter mini-game, and a game show. Additionally, while some platformers can be tedious to replay from the beginning, this game remains enjoyable.

My Verdict

I would highly recommend getting The Legend of the Mystical Ninja because it is not only entertaining and humorous, but it also features excellent graphics and is enjoyable to play with a friend.

Play it on the iconic Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a damn good emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
