Is sex education important for children?

Children, you need to be taught sex education, both in school and at home, as you are growing up, to guard and protect you, especially in this increasingly immoral world where sexual misbehaviour is rampant. It is desirable that children (you) should be given reliable education about sex, formally and informally, as an integral part of growing up.
But such knowledge, when given formally, ought to be presented in such a responsible manner that is suitable for your age and maturity, since sex education is taken to be the education given to adolescents on sex and its related issues. It seeks to make an individual aware of the social, moral, psychological, and physiological characteristics of human sexuality.

Sex education is inevitable in this modern world of sexual immorality. Parents and teachers who find it difficult to give sex education need courage and conviction to advocate self-discipline and moral restraint. In the absence of this courage and conviction, pregnancies may result, which tends to unduly embarrass and disturb both boys and girls HIV/AIDS, STDS may be contracted. Girls bear the brunt of abortions and/or bearing unwelcomed babies, and filling their communities with children who have no legitimate fathers (bastards), thereby constituting a lot of problems to themselves, their families, communities and the society at large. Their career and future marriage prospects may be jeopardized.

Young girls who indulge in sexual intercourse are exposed to the risks of contracting veneral diseases, suffering total infertility or even death owing to sepsis from procuring abortions. In the light of the above, sex education can be defined as the process by which men and women (young and old) are enlightened on matters relating to sex and sexual behaviours promote good moral, good health and healthy relationships among all the people in a society.

Benefits of Sex Education:

1. Sex education encourages individuals to postpone sexual intercourse until they are married.

2. It helps to reduce teenage pregnancies.

3. It reduces the incidence of
   abortion among our girls.

4. It enlightens the young on the dangers of pre-marital sex.

5. It teaches our children to abstain from sexual intercourse, as the act could lead to the contracting of deadly diseases such as HIV/ AIDS, STDs, etc.

6. It teaches our young and old to be
   faithful to their husbands and wives.

7. It helps to reduce the rate of HIV
   prevalence in our society.

8. It enlightens people on the use of contraceptives, e.g., condoms etc, and makes them realize that no method of contraception has proved completely effective, either in preventing pregnancies or in stopping the transmission of veneral diseases; the only safe contraceptive is abstinence.

9. It helps to make both old and young people responsible parents by them on population and family life education, to beget the number of children they can train.

10. It exposes children and adults to healthy sexual practices, thereby reducing the incidence of sexual abuse drastically.
