It is Wednesday!
Is it my imagination that this week feels like it has flown by?

Let’s take a look at last week’s clues.

1. It is a 13-letter word starting with “C.”
2. It is a compound word

Oh gosh! I had you all scratching your heads this week.

The answer is a COUNTERPOISES!

According to Vocabulary.com counterpoise has two meanings.

1. a weight that balances another.
2. a force, influence, or power that balances or neutralizes another.

Counterpoises are typically used in antenna systems for radio transmitters where a good earth ground connection cannot be constructed. wikipedia.org

Then the plural of counterpoise is counterpoises.

Now the question. What is the difference between a counterweight and a counterpoise?

Counterweight:

A heavy mass of often iron or concrete, mechanically linked in opposition to a load which is to be raised and lowered, with the intent of reducing the amount of work which must be done to effect the raising and lowering. Counterweights are used, for example, in cable-hauled elevators and some kinds of movable bridges (e.g. a bascule bridge).

Counterpoise:

A weight sufficient to balance another, as in the opposite scale of a balance; an equal weight.
An equal power or force acting in opposition; a force sufficient to balance another force.
The relation of two weights or forces which balance each other; equilibrium; equiponderance.

What is interesting is that at an airfield, a complete counterpoise system is installed to act as some protection against lightning strikes.

Of importance, it must be something that you can see and not something you can feel, like an emotion.

• It teaches you how to use your logic and reasoning and
• It grows your vocabulary
