Angrej is a Punjabi folk movie. It was released in 2015. It tells the captivating folk story of subcontinent India when it was not independent. This romantic movie captures the beautiful Punjabi culture. It includes traditional love and the innocence of love in those days. It explains rural life, dance performance, folk soulful music. If I say that Angrej movie is the gem of Punjabi cinemas then it will not be wrong. I will be discussing its different aspects and sharing my watching experience with you by reviewing it.

I was 12 years old student when this movie was released. And my big brother had a computer in those days and he brought Angrej movie to watch with all the family. So it was the first time when I became familiar with this movie.

It is a lovely story movie in which an old man tells his story of love. The movie starts with the attractive Punjabi music. A boy was calling with her girlfriend and he was persuading her because she was angry with him. The boy wanted to marry the girl but due to the poor financial conditions the parents of the girl denied. Meanwhile a friend of the boy came there and he told him about the arrival of a guest. And he invited him to welcome the guest and he will get sweet balls as well. So they went to welcome the guest.

The guest was an old man with white beard. The name of this old man was Angrej. When it was the night time the boys and the old man was sitting on the roof. And the boy stood up and he started calling his girlfriend. The old man asked about the issue and in this way he remembered about his love story. The listeners became interested and they forced old man to tell his story. They insisted a lot so the old man (Angrej) started telling the story.

Angrej fell in love with Maado (girl). Once he went to her village and he saw that girl. And with one first sight he fell in deep love with her. The issue was that it was very hard to survive as a lover in those days. If the community came to know about the love then they fire the person. So it was very risky. It shows the style of old houses and how they were built with mud.

So Angrej was meeting with the girl sneakingly. And once he went in the religious fair and girl also came there. She came with her friend. They were finding each other in the rush of people. Finally the friend of Angrej saw the girl. Uffff it was an amazing moment as the person finding his love finally saw it. It was a matchless moment. But still they could not greet and meet with each other openly. He provided her some sweets and bangles as a gift.

After that they decided to meet under the nearby trees. The boy wanted to grip her hand. So the boy and the girl started scrolling their hands on the ground to grip each other's hand. They were very close to grip but they failed because of rumors of coming people. But still both were very happy. The love of the boy was going more deep and deep. So he decided to marry her as soon as possible.

There was another problem that he could not directly tell to his parents that he had fallen in love because it was a curse for them. At last he told at his home and his mother insulted him a lot. But his sister in law convinced him to help him. So the boy again went to meet her girlfriend. He told her but she was staggering from her commitment. The parents of the girl desired to marry her in a rich family but the boy was not rich. So their love story started breaking there.

Another character appeared there in the name of Hakim. Once he came in the girl's home and the parents of the girls got impressed by him. And they asked him to find a spouse for their girl. Hakim himself started taking interest in her and he was very rich as well. So the girl also slipped and she went to meet him with her friend. He came and brought a unique gift in those days. He gave her a radio. When the radio started and it played some songs the girl became horrible. He thought it might be some bad spirits those were producing voices. It was an awful and amusing moment. But Hakim told him about the reality of the radio.

The interval occured here when Angrej saw Maaado with Hakim while he was going back to his village after meeting her. He became shocked and he yelled at her. The friend of his girlfriend insulted him instead and said him to forget him. So the heart broken Angrej came back to his home weeping all the way. He remained sad all the time.

The interesting and sad thing is that he sold his buffalo to get a gold bangle for her girlfriend. He pretended that his buffalo was stolen from his home and he claimed that it was the reason of his sadness.

On this moment a wedding ceremony came there. He went there with his family to forget this incident. But unfortunately the girl also was invited there. He said by seeing her there "e ethey tendey Len ayi a" in Punjabi. He wanted to say that why she had come there. In the wedding there was another girl who came interested in Angrej. But he was not accepting her and he was still looking for his loved one to come back to hold him in that grief.

But she did not come back to him. Hakim also came there and he teased other girl in the wedding. So the bad face of Hakim was Infront of Angrej. Hakim went his home after his insult. Meanwhile Angrej commited with the second girl as she was very loyal and she loved him as well. Now Angrej forget Maado and Dhan Kaur healed him with her attention and affection.

The wedding of Dhan Kaur was going to be fixed with Hakim when Angrej reached there. But he told everything about Hakim and one old person witnessed his sayings. So they accepted his sayings and then he said that if you do not mind I want Dhan Kaur as my life partner. I will take care of her all the life. He said I am not rich but I am a hard working man. I will work hard and will feed your daughter my whole life. The parents of Dhan Kaur became agreed. In this way Angrej and Dhan Kaur married each other.

At the first wedding night Angrej gifted Dhan Kaur a beautiful gold ring. When Dhan Kaur asked from where you get this expensive ring. He claimed that he sold his last buffalo to buy a ring for you. He started laughing at him and she became angry as well. She said it was out last buffalo child and you sold it as well.

So here the story of Angrej completed. They spent their lives happily. But later on her wife Dhan Kaur died. As soon as the story ended a text also came to the boy from his girlfriend who insisted Angrej to tell his love story. Her girlfriend also agreed to marry with him.

It was an amazing movie which reflects the Punjabi culture in each aspect. Angrej paid for the tailor pumpkins who sewed his dress. It also reflects the old days of humans when there was no standard of currency. I have watched this movie many times. It looks always new to me whenever I watch it. I downloaded it on my mobile phone in 2022 and now it is 2024. But still I have not deleted it from my mobile. My mother also watches this movie.

At the end I want to mention the amazing songs of this movie such which add more impact to this movie. The most lovely songs are Vanjhali Vaja and Kurta Suha. The movie is also funny but the comedy in the movie is in a balanced way and it is directed in a wonderful way.

Conclusion

Angrej is a delightful movie. It shows the rich Punjabi culture. It shows how people used to love in the past and how the weddings and other events were celebrated. It is full of love, laughter, and innocence of the folk people. It tells about rural life. It gives us the lesson that we should go towards those who love us rather than to go to those to whine we love.
