Today am talking on the issue of child neglect which of course has become an incessant part of our Society at large. Many children in one way or the other have been a victim of neglect starting from the conscious neglect of parents who may have given Birth to more than they can carter for or to children who by reason of circumstances to death or war or natural disasters have been abandoned and neglected or some parents who out of sheer irresponsibility have turn their wards to victims of neglect.

What does neglect of responsibilities mean in a family

Neglect of responsibilities as it implies simple means the act of looking down of one’s responsibility or the absence of commitment in the part of the parents who are supposed to be in charge of the family and look after the children whom they brought into the world.

When a father or a mother wouldn’t rise up to expectations in the issues regarding the children in the area of feeding, health care, providing education and other basic necessities for the children, then neglect is said to have set in.

Have you been neglected or seen anyone neglected? What are the effects on the kids.

I’ve not been neglected. I had the privilege of having responsible parents for which am eternally grateful for.

I’ve seen children who are neglected by their parents. In fact just yesterday one of my friends showed a viral video of two children who were abandoned by their parents at a very popular junction at the city of Owerri Nigeria.

From the video, you would see that this act wasn’t a coincidence because the kids were looking emaciated showing that the neglect hasn’t been a recent thing. How can a parent abandon two children with their bags in the road. My heart just broke. That’s the height of neglect.

These acts of neglecting children has so many negative effects on the children. Every child needs a proper home to grow up to to be able to fit into society and do well at last. Children who are victims of neglect always lack that parental love and care which in turn affects their mental well being and these children end end having psychological issues which stunt their development.

They feel estranged from the Society and most times have behavioral defaults. Some of them grow up in the streets and become violent and a mayhem to the society at large. The menace of street cultism and theft and the host of hoodlums are mostly children who were neglected. They didn’t have the proper environment for a proper upbringing hence the destructive effects on their destiny.

Your advice to parents who neglect their responsibilities towards their kids.

My advice to these parents is that they should man up and take charge of their children as their responsibilities. The children didn’t asked to be brought into the world. They brought them in and hence should assume their role to care for their children knowing that those children could be their reward system in the future.

My advice for neglected children is that they should not be bitter towards their parents or their guidance who have not fulfilled their obligations to them. Bitterness will only block their way to receiving favour from other people who may be of help to them.

They can also look out for possible ways to help themselves by looking out for small things they can do to take care of themselves.

They can pray to God and trust God to send them helpers or favour and not get themselves in vices which could stunt their growth in life.
