SEC17 WK:#6: My Family, My Pride!

Families are a beautiful part of our existence and no one is a terminator right?

We are all have a root and no matter how bad or good, we all have that thing we love about our family. For me there’s a lot and my family is indeed my pride.

There are many things that make my family outstanding.

• The first is that my family was a hub of peace. I’d say that the peaceful relationship that existed between my mum and dad was so extraordinary. I didn’t see them raise their voices at each other, quarreled or had my dad beating my mum any day.

I don’t even know if they had issues but it was simply not rubbed into our faces and that means a whole lot. Our home was a haven of peace.

• You know that saying that a family that prays together, stays together. In my home it’s a tradition to pray together with one another . We prayed together every morning championed by mum and later dad joined the crew before his demise.

We were a praying family and that helped to champion parts of my spiritual journey growing up. I learnt that praying is important for our existence.

• A family that prays together also eats together. Yes we did eat together until we were all grown up and left the house. The fun or eating together and joking having squabbles about who ate meat or fish while eating had no equating.

Whenever we fight over who ate the meat or fish meant for everyone and hopefully match towards mum and dad to judge the victim, it was fun.

• We all practically went to boarding houses. Mum and dad made sure every one of us kids did. We don’t know why but it was like a traditional in the house and we followed suit and it made us become independent earlier than expected.

We all grew into fine young men and women who would learn early to fend for themselves while being guided my their parents love. We weren’t from a rich family but mum and dad made sure we had just what we needed when we needed them.

• I won’t forget to mention the story times. Those days growing up, I always look forward to great story times by mum. After dinner we would gather around mum to tell us scary, sweet and sad stories about the tortoise, spirits and the animal kingdom.

These stories made up huge parts of my growing up and great memories that I practically laugh whenever I remember the strangeness of the stories that I swallowed hook line and sinker as a child.

Mum made them so real that you couldn’t help but believe them. They appear funny now but then they helped to shape some of my reasoning and moral discipline. We knew there was a repercussion for any evil done.

• Did your family embody some superstitions? Mine was not left out. Those superstitions added fun to our growing up. Some of them includes ;

• When you swallow an orange seed or any fruit seed especially oranges, the tree would grow in your stomach. It made us so afraid that we were careful anytime we were eating oranges.

• When our teeth falls off, we throw it to the zinced roof and ask a lizard to swallow it so that our teeth can grow back. We believed that if it was swallowed by a rat, the teeth will not grow back.

Now that feels so stupid but then it was a serious issue. We would confidently stand in front of that great roof that holds the destiny of our next tooth growing back and ask the rat not to swallow the tooth and ask the lizard to before we throw it up our neighbors roof. So stupid. Hahaha.

• We also believed that when our palms or our eyelids start itching that someone is about to give us money.

So many memories made my family fun to be in. Now we are all grown and starting families of our own. I love my family and they are my pride.
