Your story 2 : Not A Mistake

in Steeming Community3 years ago (edited)

"You are nothing but a waste of space. Useless. You are no son of mine. I wish your mother had a miscarriage and you were never born. You are a mistake"

These are the words young Thomas had heard all his six years of living. His father who insisted to be called John, was never one to spare whenever he saw Thomas or if anything went wrong at home.

His mother Sarah, could only watch her son get abused verbally but could not protect him. After all, she was the cause of his suffering. If only she hadn't been so frustrated with having no child after five years of marriage. If only she hadn't cried out her troubles to Frank, John's best friend. Then maybe, just maybe she would not have had drinks with him and that unfortunate night never would have happened.

Thomas on the other hand remained quiet because he was used to. It was not his fault that John agreed to raise him as his own and forgave his mother. It was not his fault that things changed after he was born. It was not his fault that John was unable to have children. Nothing was his fault and yet, he was punished for everything.

As soon as John dismissed him and went to his room, he turned to leave but before he could go far, his mother gathered him in a tight hug with tears running down her cheeks and said "Do not listen to him my child. You are a blessing. My miracle. I will never regret having you. I love you very much".

It warmed his heart but didn't ease the pain, as soon as he could sneak out of the house, he went to his favourite hiding spot in the garden and cried. He cried, yelled and screamed his frustrations out.

In school, some students taunted Thomas saying "Daddy doesn't love you". From all he was going through, he finally lashed out and pushed the other student on the ground. Then he started screaming at him and then it slipped from his mouth "At least I have parents. Where is your mother?" The other child burst into tears; his mother died during childbirth. At the sight of the child crying, Thomas regained his senses and realised what he said. He, a victim of abuse, just verbally abused another child. He was turning into John.

Scared, Thomas ran away from the scene and cried. Cried for what he was going through and cried for what he was becoming. Mrs Smith, his teacher who had been observing his behaviour in school and knew the basics from his mother came upon the scene. While another teacher consoled the crying child, she went to find Thomas and was heartbroken at the sight.

She knew nothing could change his situation but decided to help him. "Prove them wrong. Prove yourself wrong", she whispered and hugged the Thomas. These words resonated in the young Thomas and slowly formed his resolve.

Twenty years later, he became a police officer. Helping people became his passion. He wished he could be like Mrs Smith and help any child suffering like he did. He brought those commiting crimes to justice. He was not nothing and he was not a mistake.

People who hurt us have weaknesses they try to hide and relieve by picking on others, that is true of the real world and very evident from your story. I like how realistic you ended the story... Many people go on to make the character become some president and so, putting false hope in people truly in similar situation. When they don't become those high end things that stories like that made them believe they'd become, they become extra depressed.

Thank you @damzxyno. I tried to keep it as realistic as possible without running it into a full story. As you rightly said, hurt people hurt people. It is inevitable. But we have to understand that everybody goes through pain. It is how you react to what happens to you that defines you; either you become just like those who hurt you or you become better. I generally like to see the positive side.

I like your story, the ending is good. It was the mother and the teacher that helped guide Tomas well.
