• pain : 신체적 정신적 갑작스런 단기간의 통증.
  • (육체적인) 고통; 치통 dental pain; 찌르는 듯한 아픔 a stab of pain, 아파서 잠이 깨다 awake in pain; 등이 아프다 have back pains
  • (정신적인) 괴로움, 고민, 고뇌, 비탄; 이별의 슬픔 the pain of parting; 그의 말에 큰 상처를 받았다 His words caused me great pain.
• ache : 신체 일부의 계속적인 아픔. 주로 아픈 부위를 나타내는 말과 함께 합성어로 쓰임. headache.
• agony, anguish : 참을 수 없을 정도의 계속적인 아픔. 비유적 용법도 많음.
  • (심신의) 고통, 고뇌, 고민, 비통
  • 십자가에서의 예수의 고뇌 the anguish of Jesus on the Cross; 괴로운 나머지 소리를 지르다. cry out in anguish; 그의 마음은 괴로움을 찢어질 것 같았다. His heart was torn with anguish.
