Overachiver

Overachievers would reliably come to class everyday with everything they needed. Instead of playing around and looking out the window, they took notes and asked question. When they didn't get something the first time around, they tried again and again, sometimes coming for extra help during their lunch period or during afternoon electives. Their hard work showed in their grades. (p.17)

I began to reflect on how smart even my weakest students sounded when they talked about things that genuinely interested them. These were conversations I found almost impossible to follow: discourses on basketball statistics, the lyrics to songs they really liked, and complicated plotlines about who was no longer speaking to whom and why. When I got to know my students better, I discovered that all of them had mastered any number of complicated ideas in their very complicated daily lives.

My students weren't equally talented. Still,when it came to learning seventh-grade match, could it be that if they and I mustered sufficient effort overtime , they'd get to where they needed? Surely, I thought they were all talented enough.

수학 선생님의 경험.

성적 평가를 해보니, 학생들을 세 부류로 나눌 수 있었다.

1. 수업 내용을 다른 학생들보다 더 쉽게 알았던 학생들 중 일부의 성적은 기대한만큼 높지 않았다.
2. 반면 수업 초반에 강의를 쫓아가지 못해 힘들어했던 학생 중에 기대했던 성적보다 높게 나온 학생들도 있었다. 그 학생들의 특성은 수업 준비를 철저히 하였고, 수업에 집중하였다. 뿐만 아니라 어려운 문제는 반복해서 풀었으며 그래도 해결하지 못한 문제는 선생님에게 도움을 구하였다.
3. 한편, 성적이 낮은 학생일지라도 성적과 무관한 분야, 그러니까 자신이 관심가지는 분야에 대해서는 선생님도 미처 알지 못하는 부분까지 이야기하는 재능이 있었다.

결론은 학생과 선생이 충분히 시간을 들여 노력한다면 초기 설정한 목표는 달성할 수 있을 것 같다. 학생들의 재능이 모두 같지 않으며, 학생 모두에게 그정도의 재능은 있다는 생각이다라는 이야기.

여기서 선생님이 자기에게 했던 질문을 서술형으로 바꿔보면,

1. 선생님이 한 단원의 수업을 마친 후, 학생이 개념을 명확히 이해하지 못하고 어려워한다면 그 학생들은 시간이 더 필요하다?!
2. 수업 내용을 더 잘 전달해줄 다른 설명 방식을 찾아야 한다?!
3. 재능이 없는 것은 어떻게 해줄 수 없다고 속단하기 전에 노력의 중요성을 고려해야 한다?!
4. 학생들과 선생님이 좀 더 지속적으로 노력할 방법을 찾아내는 것이 교사로서의 책임이다?!
