FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD MOVIE| Steem Sri Lanka: Contest Series – Week 04 | Jumanji (1995)

When you first heard the name Jumanji the first image comes to our mind is the global hit movie which stars Dwayne Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart. But the kids from 90s recall a movie which is the original Jumanji movie screened in 1995 which was my childhood favorite.

Why Jumanji is my Childhood Favorite

I remember when I was in grade 2 in the year 2002 my father brought the first VCD player to home. It was huge at the time and approximately size of a modern CPU. He brought 3 movies among them they were Goofy Movie (1995), Spirit (2002) and Jumanji.
I watched all 3 movies same day and I loved Jumanji from all 3 the most not because it because it was funny and scary at the same time.
I was scared at the first time I watched the movie but after watching several times it became more funny than scary. I was in a confusion while writing this review because it was fifty fifty between spirit movie and Jumanji because both have a special place in my heart.

About Movie

Jumanji is directed by Joe Johnston and it is based on a picture book by Chris Van Allsburg published in the year 1981. The movie stars Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde, Bebe Neuwirth etc. The movie grossed around $263 million worldwide and the budget was only $63 million. It was a box office success and 10th highest grossing movie in the year 1995.

Fun Fact : Kirsten Dunst portray the role of Judy who was 13 years old by the time and if you are a marvel fan we all know her for the iconic role as Mary Jane in the Spider Man (2002)

Plot

Jumanji is a mythical board game which can be played by four persons. The player who plays the game have to go through a series of adventures which is deadly and happens in real life. Each player have 2 dice which is rolled to move the game pieces and when it reach the center the game ends with the call of the name Jumanji.

In the year 1969 young boy named Alan Parrish finds the game under a construction site which was buried by another 2 boys in the starting of the movie in the year 1869. Alan is the only son of a wealthy shoe maker and he is bullied every day. He invites Sarah Whittle to play the game and when she rolls the dice the pieces of the board moves automatically and a message appears in the middle. When its Alans turn he turns the dice and the game display shows,

"In the jungle you must wait, until the dice read five or eight."
Which sucks Alan into the game.

The next sequence starts in the year 1995 after 26 years where the mansion Alan was living is for sale because Alans father spent all his money to find his son and died failing. All those years people thought the mansion was haunted and no one bought it. Judy and Peter Shepherd aunt buys the house and on the first day before going school they hear a drum sound in the attic of the mansion and after checking they finds the board game.

The movie flows from there on when they roles the dice and series of adventures comes to play with Alan Parrish finally freed from the Jumanji and reunite with Sarah to finish the game. Each roll give different task or a treat such as animal attacks, hunter, earth ripped open etc. The four finishes the game with many hardships and finally goes back to their original timeline.

Final Thoughts

I think this movie is funnier than any other sequels of the movie which are Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: Next Level (2019). You will never feel bored watching the movie because it is packed with humor. If you haven’t watched the movie I highly recommend it.
