Do You Have A Cotton Tree?

Have you ever plucked cotton from a cotton tree? For the first time in my life, I experienced it recently. We don't where it came from, but we have a small cotton tree at our place. It is Known locally as the "Kapuk" or "Kapok" tree.

In Sri Lanka, the Cotton Tree is not as prominent as in some other regions, but it can still be found in certain areas, particularly in botanical gardens and other cultivated spaces.

The tree gets its name from the fluffy, cotton-like fibers that surround its seeds, which are used for various purposes such as stuffing pillows and mattresses. These days we have been collecting them for the purpose of making a pillow, which means a homemade pillow.

Local stories say that the Kapuk trees are very special and cutting them down or hurting them could make bad things happen or upset the spirits in them. So, people usually don't cut them, even if it makes building things or making changes a bit harder.

Cotton has various uses in Sri Lanka, contributing to modern industries and day-to-day life. Its fluffy fibers are used to make pillows and mattresses, giving them a cozy feel.

Cotton is widely used in the textile industry in Sri Lanka for the production of clothing. Especially, Sri Lankan cotton textiles are known for their comfort, breathability, and durability. Also, it is used in the production of home textiles such as bed linens, towels, and curtains.

Sri Lanka also exports cotton-based products, including textiles and garments, contributing to the country's economy.

Overall, cotton plays a significant role in various aspects of life in Sri Lanka. My hope is to collect cotton day by day and make a homemade pillow soon.
