Steemit engagement challenge : S12- W6 | The grand festival in my country.
Greetings everyone and welcome to my entry for 6th week of the 12th season Steemit engagement challenge from the Incredible India community titled "What is the grand festival in your country?"
What is the grand festival in your country, and how do you celebrate that festival? (Mention some rituals if you follow). |

Nigeria is a nation with diverse cultures, hence there are several festivals to be celebrated however only a few mark a grand scheme of things as nationwide public holidays are declared to celebrate them, and one of the events is Christmas, usually celebrated the last week of every December.
Christmas festivity marks the end of the year, hence celebrated as a festival to offer a decent goodbye to the dying year. Although it is widely celebrated as the marking of the birth of Jesus Christ. Undoubtedly it is a great event in the last month of the year which everyone eagerly looks forward to every year.
Christmas is the biggest carnival or festivity celebrated by people of the Christian faith and it is enjoyed not only by Nigerians but by people all over the world. Christmas festivity is celebrated with tremendous delight and pleasure.
The Christmas festival is usually celebrated by singing carols and hymns and gifting presents to loved ones and friends. People buy or make new dresses, items of decorations (to decorate their homes), and gifts to be presented to each other.
Not forgetting the lots of food to eat and make merry, people also get to visit and welcome friends and family, and capture wonderful moments with them.
Would you love to go on a vacation during this festive period, or would you love to stay in your country and celebrate the festival with your family? Give the reason behind your choice. |

Vacation out of the country? Absolutely No. Christmas is the period when we get to have the full family at home to celebrate as there is a nationwide public holiday, and even those in the private sector take a break to celebrate Christmas.
This is the period when our relatives in the city and abroad come back home to be one big happy family, it is a once in a once-in-a-year opportunity to meet the full family and relatives so I would rather stay in my country and celebrate with family and loved ones.
Share with us if you have any memorable moments related to the festival. |

There is no special festival without special delicacies and memories. Christmas therefore, always comes with special food according to the economic strength of the household.
For most households, it's usually Rice, either Coconut Rice, Fried Rice, Jollof Rice, or Rice and Stew with the meat always trusted to be chicken or turkey in most households.
Here comes the special part, all this food when cooked is always shared with the neighbors, so often we get to eat 4-5 different types of meals as neighbors exchange plates.
Then again, my fondest memory of Christmas is of a banger war my family had with our close family friends when I was still a young lad. I am sure the word ‘banger’ rings a bell to you, it is popularly known as a knockout then, over here in Nigeria. This banger war was one activity we looked forward to every year.
On this particular Christmas, we all traveled back to the village for our usual annual homecoming experience, As I earlier stated, Christmas is incomplete without visiting our family and loved ones in the village, and it was in the village that we had this war.
My siblings and I placed a "banger" inside a steel container, set it on fire, and had it blow up right in front of our neighbor's front door, and then they reciprocated.
CONCLUSION |
Christmas festivity is all about giving and sharing with family, friends, and loved ones as it unites people in the spirit of love and oneness. It is one festivity that is celebrated worldwide and not just in Nigeria alone.

Christmas is a time celebration all over the world for both pagans and christians. It is always a loud celebration filled with rejoicing and fire works (banger) everywhere.
One thing about Christmas is that it brings family together and people reconcile with each other. Which is really good for a healthy relationship.
I love Christmas too. Thanks for sharing with us
