You still celebrate birthdays?

Today it's my eldest birthday.

I remember the pregnancy, the birth, the first apartment we lived in. It was in a very religious village that was rather hostile against those who did not share their belief. Nothing was allowed or possible on Sundays. No bus, no cab. If you were very lucky the ambulance came.

We moved to a city in the same province. It was a relief.
After that, we moved again to a university town, where we moved three times. Three different schools until we found a great one. We moved again, again and again. More schools and more hostile people. People who told my eldest to * F... off * to her own country. A white kid with blond hair, born and raised in a country, good grades, gentle, attentive, polite, no troublemaker.

We lived on and survived.
These days the unwanted kid by so many (family and father in the first place) is popular and wanted.
If you are successful people like you and show up on your doorstep.
Suddenly you are important to them.

"I would give you 1000 euro for your birthday", the father who suddenly showed up and never wanted or saw his kid before said, " unfortunately I don't have it can you give me..."

We no longer celebrate birthdays together.
We do not live in the same house, the same town or even the same country. To us, it is fine the way it is. We have WhatsApp and do no longer feel the pressure to celebrate, please guests and put on our "happy face". We can spend our money the way we like and buy ourselves a birthday present. Something we like.

If people never care(d) about you, it's not flattering, nothing to be happy about, if they suddenly show up, only because they believe there's something to grab at for free. If you lost contact with someone there's a good reason for it.

I always celebrated my children's birthday, made the best out of it.
I find it important for them to know they are wanted and loved. It does good to be the center of attention for at least one day a year.
We invited people, had several cakes, gave presents and decorated the house.
As they became older they were allowed to choose what to do. At the age of 8, my eldest preferred Disney world above a party with guests/schoolmates and it remained this way.

Just like last year, my eldest will work.
It's a good, creative job and it means being between people who appreciate work and personality and getting paid as well.
I believe the older we get the less interest there is in celebrating our birthday.

I know some always will like my daughter who only likes it more the older she gets. If not possible on the day a week or month later is fine too as long as the family is present and there are pies, cakes, chocolate, m&ms, good food and there are presents!

Birthdays are fun when you're young. When grown up they're just a reminder of how old you are.

A downvote challenge? I do not know what to think about that. A downvote is fine if it is about plagiarism (which I find hard to figure out and am not going to waste my time with because my connection is too slow plus many have different acvounts under different names), spam... only one person does that and even changes his name. Downvoting does not seem to help and I am not flattered by seeing screaming/aggressive advertising underneath my posts.
Since I have no idea what it is about I will try to figure it out. I wish you a great day. Thanks for the overview.

Yes, but not with a big party.
There is always a cake and candles. Sometimes singing.
But this is all. I am not a fan of big parties.
