The Offer
Kelvin stared at the huge sum of money on his table, confused at what to do. He knew where the money came from and what it was meant for but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. Returning the money was the only reasonable thing to do but five million naira was a huge sum of money and would surely make a whole lot of difference in his life right now but was he willing to do what he had to do to keep the money?
Kelvin and Amanda had met at the cinema. They had both sat next to each other all through the two hours that the horror movie played for and somehow along the movie, they had somehow became friends because of how scary the movie was to Amanda. After the movie, Kelvin had asked why she had chosen to see an horror movie if she was going to be that scared and she had told him that she had done it on purpose to challenge herself that she was strong enough to see a horror movie by herself, a challenge she had failed woefully.
The both of them had later exchanged numbers and hung out more. It didn't take long before they both started dating. And as one of the requirements of being Amanda's boyfriend, Kelvin had to come over to her family house for dinner, an idea Kelvin didn't really like but he did it anyway. It was just dinner, how bad can it get?
But things never remained the same after that one dinner. Amanda's dad had been welcoming and tried to make jokes every now and then at the dinner table but Amanda's mom had been something entirely different. She didn't like Kelvin the moment he walked in and she didn't even try to hide it.
Later that night after dinner, Amanda had apologized about the way her mom made him feel and promised he would like her if he got to know her. She told him she was only that way because she wanted to matchmake her with one of her friends son which Amanda had bluntly refused. Kelvin had smiled that night and told her he knew her mom would come around and she did but not as he expected.
Few days after the dinner happened, Kelvin had heard his doorbell ring and rushed to go open his door only to be shocked by who was standing by his door.
“Good mor.. Good afternoon ma” Kelvin stuttered. “errmmm please come in and make yourself comfortable.”
Amanda's mom walked in, her eyes scrutinizing the whole place. “Look, I think we both know that I don't like you, so I will just cut through the chase. Here in this bag is five million naira. Take it and leave me daughter alone. You look like you need it anyway.” She said as her driver dropped the bag filled with cash before they both walked out. Kelvin did nothing other that stare at the bag, speechless.
He loved Amanda more than he has ever loved anyone, but he also needed the money, what was he going to do?
