Contest!!! Events in Our History

INTRODUCTION

Greetings everyone
We've all experienced different events being celebrated in our society, hence this wonderful contest by @cryptoloover titled "Events in our History" and this here, is my entry.

Tell us about the most popular and memorable event that occurred in your country's history?

Varieties of events are being celebrated in Nigeria on a national tier to improve awareness among the people of the nation. Among all these events celebrated the ones that are history bound are;

• Worker's Day (May 1st)
• Democracy Day (June 12th)
• Independent Day (October 1st)

These are all holidays or events celebrated with history attached to them. Worker's Day is an event that takes place every year to celebrate public sector workers.

To know more about why and how we celebrate Democracy Day click here. But among them all, the biggest event celebrated is Independence Day (October 1st) in memory of our Independence from our colonial masters, the British people.

Is there any involvement of that event in the creation of your country? Tell us about it.

Yes, like I said earlier, Independence Day is celebrated yearly in remembrance of the day Nigeria gained independence from her British colonial masters. The history goes way back to 1960.

Independence Day doesn't necessarily mean the day human civilization was found in Nigeria as historians documented African civilizations, such as the Nri Kingdom, the Benin Empire, the Songhai Empire, and the Oyo Empire before the coming of the British Empire.

The British were said to have invaded Lagos, the capital of Nigeria then. Making the nation of Nigeria a British Protectorate. Giving them rights over our natural resources for more than a hundred years before an independence movement was established after world war II.

It was not until October 1, 1960, Nigeria received its freedom from being a British Protectorate to becoming a Federation, The Federation of Nigeria, which was led by an all-Nigerian Executive Council for three years. The Federation of Nigeria later became the Federal Republic.

This historic day is celebrated extravagantly as a National Holiday with fireworks, cultural displays, dance, marching of troops, playacting, and a banquet for dignitaries together by all ethnic groups and cultures.

What is the main lesson that can be obtained from that event?

The Independence Day celebration is a very important occasion for a nation as it is an event set aside to commemorate the freedom of Nigerians from the British Colonial masters.

The lessons to learn are numerous as this event helps foster the connection between the upcoming generations of the nation and the nation. It's a path to deliver our history to generations.

CONCLUSION
