Food Diary #014 | Somay

Howdy

Welcome to my daily food diary. Today I am sharing my lunch here, Somay. Somay is came from the name of SHUMAY or shumai, a traditional Cantonese cuisine or maybe we know it more well with the name of Chinese Dumpling.

However people here usually eat shumai with peanut sauce and some extra soy sauce and chili sauce. This dish is a variant from chinese dumpling which was first introduced in eastern part of Java Island. Due to it, some people until today call it as Somay Bandung, or Bandungese shumai. Bandung is the capital of East Java.

Shumai is one of the most popular street food here. Some said this is a popular comfort food, because people here won't call a dish as lunch or dinner if it doesn't have any rice or eaten together with rice.

Anyway this somay or shumai doesn't contain any pork or lard, because it is an adapted food and most of the people here are moeslim. So all adapted food are halal, no pork and no lard. But it doesn't mean there is no Somay with pork. Some are but they are hard to find and mostly due to the limited competition, their price is a lot higher.
