As the second regional radio station of the Sri Lanka Radio Corporation, Ruhunu service started on 3rd February 1980. Accordingly Ruhunu completes 44 years of service. Most of the districts of Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Moneragala, Badulla, Ampara, Ratnapura are included in the hearing area of Ruhunu service. At that time Ruhunu Seva programs were broadcast on Weerakati and Deniaya medium wave stations. At present you can listen to Ruhunu service on FM 107.3 from Deniya and FM 107.5 from Haputala.

Ruhunu Seva started as per the advice of the then State Minister Dr. Ananda Tissa de Alvis. At that time the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Radio Corporation was Mr. Amon Kariyakarawana and the Director General was Mr. Tevis Guruge.
By 1987, with the Indo-Lanka Peace Agreement, the turbulent situation in the country also affected Ruhunu Seva. On July 29, 1987, violent rioters stormed Ruhunu Seva and set fire to it, causing great destruction.
Along with that, the ancient building called Nupe House which existed since the English era and all Ruhunu Seva broadcasting equipment were destroyed. Eyewitnesses of the incident said that the terrorists, disguised as monks, threw it into a big kalala and set it on fire. The terrorists, who were scared by the death sound of the automatic generator, fled in fear.
After a few days, broadcasting started for a limited time... a few equipments were saved by a tea worker who was used to start it.
Then again on December 12, 1993, Ruhunu service broadcasting activities were restored by opening the new studio complex. The first director of Ruhunu Service was Sripali Wayman. Then Mr. Hilton Perera, S. it. S. Several people like Mr. Wickramaratne, Mr. Thilaka Sudarman de Silva, Mr. Colvin Jayaweera worked for the advancement of Ruhunu service.
Ruhuna or Rohana BC. It has a very long history dating back to the 5th century. The kingdom of Ruhunu has been introduced in genealogies and cell inscriptions with names such as Ruhunu country, Ruhunu government, Rohana deshaya, etc.
As noted by the great poet Vellala Jayamathyan, Ruhuna lives in Heladiva. Ruhuna is the birthplace of heroes, veterans, poets. Taking pride in the uniqueness of Ruhuna, which claims such pride, Arambi Radio is 'Ruhunu Radio'.
It was started on the 3rd day of February 1980 in the building called 'Nupey House' which has famous old facilities. In a congratulatory message on the occasion of its inauguration, Mr. Ananta Tissa De Alvis, who was the Minister of State at that time, said:
As another step in the effort to bring radio closer to the people, the Ruhunu Regional Center will be established in Matara by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Since then, the new radio service has been responsible for preserving and nurturing the proud history and culture of Ruhuna. He worked to raise the enjoyment of the people of Ruhuna to a higher level by mobilizing the people for the sake of development.
At a time when there were no other radio channels, the service rendered by Ruhuna Radio by coming closer to the people was immense. Programs were planned and presented with the participation of talented children, youth, adults and scholars of the area. It worked tirelessly to endow the nation with many great artisans, artists and scholars.
It should be mentioned that many leading artistes of many radio and television channels have their manuals from Ruhunu Radio. Planning programs through cultural, social, economic, political etc. events is also a specialty. Nowadays, when you hear the word radio, some people think of song.
Since the radio stations that have been established now mostly broadcast music programs, the station was set on fire by saboteurs in 1987 while it was engaged in continuous service without fulfilling the assigned responsibilities.
