TL;DR World War II #1 - German invasion of Denmark, Norway and France
Hey, this is a first episode of World War II history, besides the educational purposes this series has my personal aim to fight with procrastination and improve my language skills. I promise each and every episode will contain fewer mistakes.
On 9 April 1940 the invasion of Denmark and Norway by German troops began ("Operation Weserübung"). While Denmark was already fighting without a fight on 10th April, the Norwegians were bitterly opposed.
In this war , the British were already seized, the Royal Navy destroyed 10 German destroyers (heavy war ships), but the British could not stop the German army. On 10 June 1940, the last Norwegian troops emerged, Norway's King Hakon VII fled to London. Norway was firmly in German hands.
Denmark and Norway, however, were not the only war zones in 1940, because on 10 May 1940 the attack on France took place. With Denmark and Norway Hitler had relatively easy game, But France was a much stronger opponent. Hitler wanted to attack France as early as 1939, but his generals feared a defeat. Overall, the attack was postponed to 29 X.
With Hitler, the generals discussed the following plan: Already in the First World War the Germans had not attacked France directly, but via Belgium and Luxembourg. This is why the French and British believed that Hitler would try again this time. For this reason, the French and the British moved their troops to the Belgian frontier because they expected the main attack on the German army. But it came quite differently. This is why the French and British believed that Hitler would try again this time. For this reason, the French and the British moved their troops to the Belgian frontier because they expected the main attack on the German army. But it came quite differently.
And the plan went on. While Belgium and the Netherlands were swiftly defeated, they succeeded. British and French troops did not stop the German armed forces. When Army Group C broke through the Maginot Line , the defeat of France was inevitable. During the French campaign, Italy also decided to enter the war on the side of Germany . On June 22, 1940 France had to sign a truce - after a little more than six weeks France was defeated. What did not succeed in the First World War in four years , the German army carried out within a very short time. Hitler was at the height of his power. But Hitler could not beat his opponents. at Dunkirk succeeded the British and part of the French army, with ships to England to escape. Hitler had the advance of his tanks stopped at Dunkirk. Why he did this can not be answered today. As I said, Hitler was at the height of his power and he did not miss the chance to avenge himself on the French for the defeat of the First World War. The French had to sign the truce under the new Prime Minister, Pétain, in the same railway wagon as the Germans did. Hitler entered triumphantly with the German armed forces in Paris.
