If someone from ancient Rome suddenly appeared among us, what would be the hardest thing to explain to him?

in #history7 years ago (edited)

So, let's make it fun: I'm sending 1 STEEM to up to 10 of you guys that try to explain the most ridiculous thing to that poor Roman. 10 most valuable comments are rewarded! My discretion! 😎

The Roman Empire was founded in 27 BC.

During that period, clothes distinguished the social classes of the people, the mother tongue was Latin, people were entertained by deadly clashes between gladiators and the most profitable market was that of slaves.

Imagine that an ancient Roman suddenly found himself in today's society.
What would be the most complicated thing to explain to him?

Me: "I have this device in my pocket through which I can look at photos of cats and argue aggressively with people I don't even know"

That's actually shameless me with a white towel around my shoulders and the laurel crown I wore at my graduation. Yeah, that's how we do it... Not the towel, the crown thing.

So, I'm curious to know what you guys would try to explain to an ancient Roman. Comment below.

Upvotes and Resteems would be much appreciated! ✌✌

Sort:

The ancient romans were cool with technology (they had inherited lots of it from the Greeks like astrolabes etc).

I think the thing that would puzzle them the most is womens rights and women leaders. (The ancient Spartans gave a lot of rights to women who ran the economy while the men trained for war, but the Spartans were considered weird by all the other ancient people's).

Very interesting, didn't think of that! Sending 1 STEEM your way 😊

Unfortunately, that didn't work out so well for them, as there was a very strong correlation between when the men more or less abandoned the government for war and when catastrophic things happened to Sparta. This is perhaps an expected outcome when a theoretically experienced group suddenly delegates critical tasks wholesale to a new group without that same experience.

Sparta liked to conquer more land than they could feasibly keep subjugated.

Probably why the fuck do people push manicured miniature dogs with a pullover in a stroller!

😂 Nice one @blakadder. Sending 1 STEEM your way :)

This is great food for thought. Maybe trying to explain how big the world is. I believe Romans had a pretty limited version of the world back then. Since those ancient time the world has been mapped. Races that never saw each other meet have meet.

Is this still running? I don't see ten steem given out yet. I'll answer anyway because I have a good one.

One of the first things you'd have to explain to him is how to use our bathrooms, especially public ones.

First he'd be pretty confused as to why there were stalls. In ancient Rome public toilets were arranged with several seats in a single room. Going to the bathroom was a social activity. So right off the bat you'd have to tell our Roman time traveler to close the stall and keep conversation to a minimum.

Once in that stall, the Roman would ask where the sponge is. Romans didn't wipe with paper, they used a sponge on a stick. There'd be a trough of running water to wet the sponge and rinse it and a bucket to put it in at the end. So you'd need to explain about toilet paper. If he doesn't like it, assure him that he'll get way fewer anal parasites this way.

Last of all, you'd have to tell him to flush.

Hahaha. Well explaining what a My Little Pony convention would surely be a struggle. You earned 1 STEEM buddy, sending it your way!

It would be difficult for Romans to explain that there is a crypto currency))) And now you do not need to have coins in your hands!

We have an almost magical way of talking to anyone in the world, at any time, instantly. Most people just use it to look at naked women and cats, and the rest just argue. It's fantastic!

I would be like "You know how you guys had slaves in your time? Well in today's time, it's all reversed (With a big smile on my face). Today, we have the opportunity to be slaves to something called 'Facebook' and 'Instagram'!!!"

Then he will be like "that's dumb.."

And then I'd be like "Yeah I know, but the inventor is a genius! His name is Mr. Zuckerberg and he tricked everyone into getting addicted to something that makes him rich!! Everyone is a slave to him and they enjoy it!!"

And then the Roman will be like "Show me this 'Facebook'.."

And then I will tell him he can have a choice to be a either a slave or an Ancient Roman.. He can use Facebook and be a slave..

Or he can use an Ancient Roman concept called Steemit where he can dominate the slaves xD

And then he'll be like "HELL YEAH!"

LOL how did you find my story? :P

Liked it my friend! Sending you 1 STEEM just about now 😄
