Buying Vegetables from History!steemCreated with Sketch.

Organic vegetables are grown here, but a big surprise awaited us!

z0ioqo.jpg

Imagine that! This old house used to belong to a mayor in the 18 hundreds!

y3t0ke.jpg

We met the owner and he told us all about the place.

bgtmlw.jpg

Imagine having a front door like this?

Even the plants are old, as this guy is a huge size Lol.

Here is the surprise, in 1840 the travellers used to stable their horses here for feed and rest before they crossed the feared Sir Lowry's pass over the mountains.

oz6ha0.jpg

Untouched and in original condition, this is a heritage building!

qdhchd.jpg

At the back here you can see the modern Sir Lowry's pass on the mountain.
Now think how you would get a wagon and oxen over that mountain when there was no pass.
They used to disassemble the wagons at this side, hoist the parts over the mountain with thick ropes and assemble the wagons at the other side.

Here's the old owner in his tomato patch. They have just cleared the spinach patch next to it!

Look at that healthy spinach that Marian is holding here. No chemicals are used on the crops and we got them snails and all hahaha.

The tomatoes are also non contaminated and you can see how nice they look!

Just a last look at the windows of the house that I find so beautiful.

Oh! And finally one of the vegetable inspectors came to say goodbye to us!

Oh yes, the place is very old and the restoration blood in me was pumping. If those old doors and windows were taken down and refurbished it would really make a huge difference.
But here's the catch as the old man told us that when he dies, a developer is going to demolish everything to build new housing complexes.

So history will be erased in the modern name of "progress" and of course progress has a cousin who's name is money. The two of them are also responsible for destroying wetlands to build housing complexes. Of course each complex has tiny little gardens and a small green patch or two.
The current wild animal residents have either to compromise or to disappear.
What a story!

Just love that photo with the mountain in the background. Such a beautiful scene there.

Were there always tomatoes in SA or are they fairly new there? They and the spinach do look to be in very good health!

Thank you and we are almost surrounded by the mountains my friend.
The one open area is the ocean.
I think tomatoes arrived here with the early settlers in the 16 or 17 hundreds.
The old man in this post certainly knows from years of experience how to grow organic and healthy veggies.
Blessings!

Oh that DOOR!!!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!! MY mom @lizziesworld would love to paint that no doubt!

Thank you @jaynie and I bet once that door is sanded down it will reveal the timeless lustre of a yellow, or red hard wood. Slap a coat of clear sealer over that and you will have a grand new front door for the next 100 years.
Blessings!

aaah I quite like the aged charm though :)

Yep! Some things there that I still want to see, but will first have to become friends with uncle Willem who owns the place.
I bet there are some of those old gilded mirrors on the walls and the old style wooden picture frames.
Will have to wait and see.
Hope that you have a good weekend. Late mornings and get some rest!
Blessings!

Organic gardens and a cool old property with such history makes for a wonderful visit thanks for sharing with us

There are so many surprising stories all over the place here JJ.
This area has been the historic playground of kings, queens, princes and paupers for centuries. Even the Queen Elizabeth of the UK paid some visits here. History is rife over here my bro.
Blessings and thank you!

How sad!! I love old buildings and have renovated a few and I love them. You have to or they will put you in the grave. It is a constant fixing and repairing, but, for me it is a labor of love.

I love the line o the windows and the door is amazing. I lived in a house in Texas that my carport was an old livery stable. :)

It used to be an old army fort from days gone by... I loved that place and I love renovating old spaces into new places. I also like to keep the building as original as possible.

This was awesome and thank you for showing it off!

Thank you Lady Denise and I would not be able to stay in that old big house for a day without starting to tinker with it.
It is certainly crying out for restoration and I can see it's majesty restored in my minds eye.
It's also the stories attached to it that lends extra character, same as the old fort that you restored and one can feel the history of many generations.
Problem is that the house is on very big grounds that used to be citrus orchards, but all of the fruit trees died over time and now they use the grounds to plant organic vegetables.
A modern developers dream property.
Thank you for the kind support as usual my dear friend.
Blessings and love to you!

A sincere thank you Lady @dswigle

I just love old buildings like this one, lovely spinach you got too!
What a tragedy it will be, surely if it's declared a national heritage site it can't be destroyed? The current owner should consider applying to have it registered as such.

Any structure older than 60 years is protected by the National Heritage Resources Act. Heritage properties are managed and graded by Heritage Western Cape (HWC) and the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA).

Thank you Lady Lizelle and we know this, but the owner is old and I think from what I gathered during our discussion with him, they he is quite set on selling the place to developers. That was his excuse when I asked him why the place was not restored to ts former beauty.
I have been searching high and low, but I cannot find an trace of the property's history. Not even in the history archives.
But I will continue to search, as somewhere there has to be something.
An estate agent told me this morning that a beautiful house across the road from this one is from the same era.
Maybe I will find something!
Blessings!

What a pity, all for money!
Hope you find something about the history of the other house!

Thank you and I will keep on scratching my friend.
Blessings!
