Greek Distinguished Flying Cross

The Decoration is a gold Cross.

Composed of four wings with the Royal Cypher in the centre,
suspended from a Crown.

The Ribbon was 4mm diagonal stripes of Red and Yellow
with a very narrow Scarlet border

The pilot of a Sunderland involved in the evacuation of Greece in Apr 41.
Shot down on the Benghazi Coast in Dec 41, returned to allied lines
with his crew and 150 prisoners.

Educated at Waitaki Boys High, joined RNZAF in 37, transferred to RAF in 38.
Went on to become Air Marshall Sir Rochford Hughes KCB, CBE, AFC, Commander In Chief Far East Air Force.

He died at Taupo, NZ in 1996.

A pilot of a Sunderland involved in the evacuation of Greece in Apr 41.
On 25 Apr 41, he flew two evacuation missions, the second flight had 72
passengers, the record number of passengers ever carried by a Sunderland.

Taken Prisoner Of War when his aircraft crashed on landing on a further
mission that evening.

Was in Stalag Luft 111 during “The Great Escape”

Went on to become W/C Lamond, British Air Forces of Occupation, Germany.
