Cavern Club - The Most Frequented Pub in Liverpool

in #history5 years ago (edited)

We arrived in Liverpool last month, we’ll be here until November. Since arriving, we’ve heard about Cavern Club from roughly every.single person we’ve met and every.single person we haven’t met yet plus all of their friends and all of their enemies have said something about it too. Cabbies, waitresses, the dude who cut my hair last week, everyone:

“Make sure you see Cavern Club before you leave Liverpool.” “Have you been to Cavern yet?” “You don’t want to miss the Cavern Club.”

The Cavern Club is a warehouse cellar turned music venue on January 16th, 1957. Their headliner that evening was The Merseysippi Jazz Band from Liverpool - Merseyside.

Eight months later, on July 31st, 1957, Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group performed at Cavern Club along with their drummer, Richard Starkey. The following year, Richard Starkey, who would later become Ringo Starr, began drumming with Quarry Men, a band led by a man named John Lennon. The Quarry Men made their debut appearance at Cavern Club on August 7th, 1957.

On January 24th, 1958, the Quarry Men performed again at Cavern Club. It was during this performance they introduced their newest band member to the audience, someone who had never performed at Cavern Club—a young singer and song-writer named Paul McCartney.

On Saturday, October 11th, 1958, a performer named Lonnie Donegan said that was the first time he’d seen The Beatles perform together as a band and, on February 9th, 1961, The Beatles were formed.

The Beatles made 292 appearances at Cavern Club between 1961 and 1963 when they made their final performance on August 6th. They recorded She Loves You exactly one month later and, by the end of the year, The Beatles would begin their very first American tour and the rest is #history.

Well, we finally made it over there yesterday. Cavern Club is located at 10 Matthew Street in Liverpool, England. Matthew Street is a short, cobblestone road, alley type of walk where vehicle traffic is prohibited. There’s a handful of pubs on Matthew Street, each with live rock n roll playing from inside, all of the local college kids are hanging out, and the nostalgia is amazing.

This city loves The Beatles. They’re loved most everywhere in the world, they’re just loved a little more in Liverpool—their home. You should see the memorabilia around here, everywhere you look is Beatles. “Beatles, Beatles, Beatles.” I took several pictures on our way through town, en route to Cavern Club, this is what we saw—enjoy the rest of your weekend.

There you go again @dandays, taking us on the trip of a lifetime. Now I want to fly over and hit the clubs with ya'll. I just love the Beatles, we still have albums (vinyl) hehe I know you're probably too young to know what I am talking about ??hummm But yeah I came of age listening to their music...over and over and over again. She loves you...yea, yea, yea
Thanks for sharing, enjoy your day my friend.

What in the heck did you say?! @farm-mom, didn’t you know that’s what I did from about 18 to my early 20’s? Turned records. Shooooot, I pieced out my 40 year collection before we took off, that’s one of the reasons it took us a year and a half to leave. That was a lot of piecing!

Too young’ta.. too young’ta?? I only kept 5, 5 pieces out of a lot, I’m not kidding, probably around 10k. I saved 5, Pura’s mom is holding them for me. Ever seen this one?

Probably too young, she says.

Oh man that's cool, did you dj? and nope I have never heard of Tom and Jerry except in the cartoons.

Thanks for the history lesson on how the Beetles came to be. Love their music, but never really knew much about them, except that they came from Liverpool.
I can remember when they first performed in the states and they made an appearance on the
I can remember this appearance like it was yesterday, everyone's first reaction was, look at their hair, boy how things have changed.
One other very fond memory which included the Beetles was way back in the day when I was in elementary school.
My school had a baking contest, and with the help of my mother, we put together a Lemon Meringue cake.
Well, I won, or should I say that Mom won. There I go again, trying to take credit for a dish I had very little to do with.
The first place prize was a 45 recording of the Beetles song, Eight Days a Week.
My older sister was totally into the Beetles, so I gave her the record. You would have thought I just gave her a million bucks.
The one street performer has a couple of young ladies rocking to the tunes.
Enjoy this beautiful day. Right, it may not even be daytime in your neck of the woods, and the weather could be down right miserable. At any rate have a great Sunday.
It had to be like a walk down memory lane.
This excursion you guys are on just keeps getting better.

This excursion you guys are on just keeps getting better.

Such a cool thing to say. we got another 32 days here, in Liverpool, then we’re flying across the North Sea to Europe? Been to Greece yet? Neither have but I’ll tell whatever I figure out.

You’re very welcome for the history, I didn’t know all of that stuff either until I put this one together. Once I knew all of the fact, dang, it make the experience even better. Knowing they performed there roughly once every 5-6 days before getting their chance is dedication and, way to set the bar, The Beatles 👍🏿

Great memory about the record.

The ladies. Yeah, as freezing as it is here, it still seems like there’s at least one bachelorette party per day where they’re all half naked. Crazy.

Always a pleasure to hear from you Sweed, our weekend has been great, thanks for the kind wishes. I hope you guys have had an enjoyable one too. Chat at you soon, sir.

Hey @dandays, here is a bit BEER for you. Enjoy it!

Howdy sir dandays! wonderful scenes and photos there, nice little history lesson too. Hey I thought you guys were staying there for awhile?

We’ve been here for over a month now, on our second. That counts as “awhile” doesn’t it? We considered getting ourselves into a 6 month lease because we like it here so much but decided it’s best just to visit.

Next month is Greece, Rome for Christmas, and that’s all we have on the map for now.

Thanks for checking out this article @janton, I appreciate you continuing to keep an eye on me.

Oh ok sir dandays, I thought maybe you were going to live there. But you still have too much of the world to see! And we get to see it with you!

That was a pleasant surprise @upmewhale, thank you.
