HF20: What do I do now? - plus some MAP Rewarder news

in #hf206 years ago

Now that the effects of HF20 are slowly becoming clearer, this is a short news post about some things that users can do immediately. At the end, there is also an update for MAP Rewarder delegators.

How to check your new Voting Mana and Resource Credits

This information is not readily available on the Steemit platform, so firstly, head off to steemd.com; replace my username with your own and you will see your current status.

Voting Mana replaces Voting Power and you should see this slowly climbing.

Resource Credits replaces Bandwidth and you should also see this figure rising.

But what do the numbers mean? Well, luckily, steemd has also added an approximate calculation as to how many actions you can perform with your current levels of VM and RC.

Scroll just below the headline numbers and you will see some texts such as:

Enough credits for approximately:
100+ comments
100+ votes
100+ transfers/powerups'

Your numbers may differ from these.

I have noticed that low-value accounts - meaning low Mana - may have quite a limited number of actions available. Just keep that steemd page open in a browser tab and check it to see the effects of your actions.

One thing that is not crystal clear is whether publishing a new post will use up the same level of resources as a comment, or whether it will be more.

Can I post, comment and upvote now?

It looks as if many people can now perform most actions. However, your VM and RC are both likely to be low compared to pre-HF20, so you need to just think about what level you wish to reach. If you are used to operating around the 80% level, then limit your activity until you reach it again.

Remember that some transactions may be more important than others, such as making transfers and powering up/down; you don't want to drain your resources to the point where such transactions cannot be performed.

What was the point of it all?

The changes in resource allocation are to prepare for the coming SMTs. Owners of SMTs who manage their own websites and tokens will be able to interact with the Steem blockchain in similar ways to Steemit, but the blockchain must also ensure that third parties use resources in such a way as are commensurate with the value of their particular token. Whatever the technical reasons may be, previous bandwidth calculations were felt to be inappropriate for use by SMTs.

What should I do with my automatic votes?

Firstly, read this recent post, then look at steemd again and notice that votes have a certain cost associated with them. You may find that you need to adjust your auto-voting so that both Mana and Resource Credits remain healthy.

Also, if you haven't yet changed the timings of your auto-votes you should do so now as anything before 15 minutes will see a portion of curation rewards going back into the general pool instead of being distributed to curators. For more details, see this post.

How has HF20 affected MAP Rewarder?

MAP Rewarder usually operates at a Voting Power of 95-99%, so will have to wait for the new Voting Mana to reach similar levels. Many sources of income are also waiting for their VM to fully recharge and the general Steemit ecosystem has obviously seen a sharp drop in activity since HF20.

There will therefore be no weekly payout this Sunday and this week's income will be rolled-over into next week. This will also help low SP delegators who may otherwise have seen STEEM distributions below 0.001. The good news is that the Free Friday Upvote and SBI Saturday will be running this week, assuming systems remain stable. Also, assuming system stability, we should see increased income for next week - that should put a smile back on some Steemians.

Thanks for your support!

Thanks for the update. I'm still trying to understand all of the nuances and repercussions of the hard fork so I appreciate the info.

Thanks for the info, my friend. I was all-a-panic the other day when I couldn't do ANYTHING on Steemit. I wrote in Steem Monsters for news. Now I can post as normal. I think posting costs more and I think self voting on a post costs more too, but I need to monitor that more closely in terms of percentage. But I dunno how much that is for someone with more SP.

Thanks for this info. I didn't know Steemd gave you the approximate amount of transactions you could do. I've just been looking at my bar move back up at snail pace lol

I have not seen any very encouraging news after HF-20 if it only changes from the VM and RC side. But we all have to adjust to these changes.
