Our crypto hostel caught fire! 😱
Good Intentions Candles
Special people with special gifts come to the hostel all time. Different views and believes make the hole vibe an holistic bohemian experience. Over the weekend we had over a guest, a mom-like lady, who told us about a little ritual to bring prosperity to our lives and just for the fun and good lucks we joined the experiment.
It was something simple, just to light up a little red candle and put a note underneath, written in red ink your special wish. Again, something simple I thought...
Our Receptionist
Andres has been part of the staff for about 9 months, he is the little younger one too, I would say like the baby of the group, now with even more reasons to call him like that.
He wanted to do the ritual too, but it was a 3 day thing and it was already the second candle to be burned. To add good mojo to the situation, his girlfriend is visiting this week so he got a private room for them too, to stay cozy you know. That meant they stayed in the room the major part of the day, so he had the amazing idea to light up, not one but two candles, because he wanted to do "correctly". And of course, cherry on the top, he lighted up the candles on the table underneath the curtains, to have the even more intelligent idea of leaving the room with the candles on!!
By now you can imagine....
Fire Fire Fire!
A dramatic night
In about seconds someone felt the smell, then the smoke come to the corridor, some yelling about water and then fire! Less than 5 minutes it took to destroy the room and still not getting to bigger consequences.
The spring has brought tourist and since the weekend we are about 70% booked! Thankfully no one was hurt, and nothing really bad happened. We lost some belongings and our poor receptionist burnt almost all his clothes, but it could have been much worse.
Time to rise from the ashes... literally.

Ah, the erratic nature of hostel life. Looking on the bright side, this reminds me of the Vietnamese/Chinese New Year ritual of burning fake money, and other things, to clear out past negative energies. Fire is also an ancient symbol of transformation. Let's hope/see if this incident has actually brought on some GOOD things. Be safe...
