How to do more and not feel 'stress' - Understanding eustress

in #health6 years ago

‘I’m stressed’. We’ve all felt it at some point. But do you know the difference between stress and eustress? Thanks to Tim Ferris, God of many things including working more efficiently, making this distinction has changed my life for the better.

Stress, by definition is ‘pressure or tension’.

Eustress is ‘beneficial stress—either psychological, physical or biochemical’

If you've been reading my steemit articles, by now you may have realised I'm constantly doing something - and usually for work.

Although I try to keep a work/life balance, I tend to focus my 7 days each week on what many of you may consider to be 'work'.
Currently I work 1 full time job (running my own company) and 2 part time jobs. The part time jobs only take up 3 days per week in total. I have also just started running projects for women around the world. (Check out the feature here if you missed it.) This and other side projects eats up about 1-2 days per week of time - if you add up all the hours. Then there's all the non-work projects such as steemit etc.

Apart from that I am now focusing time on self development and professional growth. I invest quite a lot of time into learning and also try to fit in eating intuitively (and meal prepping), exercising and socialising. I am in no way bragging about how busy I am, in fact, many people have highlighted they view my lifestyle as ridiculous or unsustainable.
But by changing the way I view my life and starting to acknowledge eustress, instead of stress, I was able to do more and feel better about it.

The truth is, the more I get to know myself, the more I realise I'm one of those people who always feels like they have room to take one other thing on and these days it very rarely makes me 'stressed' or overwhelmed.

Why?

The simple answer is I know what I am capable of. Where I am in my life right now is no where NEAR where I thought I would be at this age. I thought I would be far more accomplished, in many ways. Therefore, because I know my capabilities, I know I am able to juggle what most people may consider as ‘a lot’ at one time. I like to have a few balls in the air. It keeps me on my toes and leaves little time to mess around.

When I find myself pondering whether I should do something now or later, I know I don’t have enough on and that for me is a signal to get another project on the go. I work better with positive stress and feeling eustress keeps me motivated.

Has it always been this way?

No. At one point I remember I lost my way. Whilst I was still doing the same amount of stuff, I found it to be stressful and it caused me some real issues. I felt angry that I wasn't getting enough time to myself, even though I had chosen to be as busy as I was. Just by changing my perception on the same things, I was able to enjoy a better quality of life. Which leads me on to my next point..

What's the solution?

I have found comfort in feeling what some of you might label as being ‘overwhelmed’. By renaming the feeling, we allow for attitude towards that feeling to change. Rather than saying I felt ‘overwhelmed’, I started to say I was ‘engaged’ or 'busy' but saw it as a blessing rather than a curse. The key thing here is to consciously make mental note of the feeling you are experiencing, whatever it may be.
When I'm in a state of eustress, all my senses are alert and I feel like I don’t have much room to drop any of the balls. I'm motivated to do everything and anything. Does that put pressure on me? Yes, but in a good way. If  I start to label it as ‘stress’ I will in turn probably start to see it as a negative thing and I will handle things differently. Keeping a positive attitude towards being busy is incredibly important.

Even if you are doing what you love, there are always challenges. Always things you might not want to do. But by changing your attitude towards how you view your time being consumed, I can guarantee you the outcome will be very different.

How do you guys feel about eustress? Is this something you were aware of before?

So eustress is basically a positive perception of actual stress? Did I get it right? Lol

I feel like the word "stressed" is way overused these days, same as I don't think people should use the word "depressed" as often as they do. I also imagine there are different types of stress and each type probably requires it's own management style.

I like your advice on changing your perception about something negative and turning it into a positive (which actually should be applied to a lot more things we do in life). The one thing people should watch out for is "burning out" as it can be rather damaging but I also think everyone will have a different view on what a "stressful day" looks like and what it is to them.

Good post either way! :-)

Yes it's perception but it's actually a different emotion. It's like 'angry' and 'frustrated'. They are different things. BUT eustress and distress are actually the opposite of one another.

Awesome post!

This is a really interesting subject for me because I live a really busy life currently. I'm in a pretty similar situation as you!

I have school 5 days a week, I've got many hobbies including working out, running, and cooking. All of these take a lot of time. On the side, I'm running a drop shipping business, and I'm actually currently working on a second business project... And still, I'm somehow able to spend time with friends, family, just relaxing by myself, and of course, by focusing on my number one passion, self-development! Oh, and of course, me writing on Steemit also takes some of my free time :D!

This is a lot of hard work, and sometimes it's a little bit stressful, but goddamn I love it this way! I know clearly what I want/will achieve in my life, and the only thing that will get me there is hard work :)!

PS. Tim Ferriss is a really awesome guy!

This is amazing! So happy to hear you have found a way to do more and be happy about it, especially at such a young age! I love to see young people who are high achievers with such clear goals. The future looks bright for you :-)

Quite a revealing post...Thumbs up
Meaning something good can still come out of stress after all...Lol

Totally it can @jerry815. It's all about how you view your world.

We humans do love to talk about stress and forget how important eustress is! Thanks for pointing that out by sharing your own experience. In my opinion, it's all about finding balance. Easy to say, right? But we all need time and experience to reach a point in our lives where we can balance out being busy and taking time off. There are easier times than others and it's important to accept that it's ok if we can't always be active 100%.

I'm with you @jessicapixie. Balance is also key. Completely! Also finding a balance that is right for you. Everyone has different intensities of working and living. There is no one right way.

I love this! I just have the problem of not knowing my limits, or more precisely ignoring them and overworking my self. SO I get busy busy busy and just brake and then I get in a bad state of depression, BUT I'm getting better at managing it.
I read this thing a year or so ago, that being busy is overrated and that there are huge benefits in slow living.
I think if one learns to strike a balance between the two that benefits them personally they won the life lottery.

This was an awesome article! One of the best ones I read this week! That's why I decided to mention this article in my Top 3 Steemit Articles Of The Week-post!

Congratulations on your award :)! If you want, you can contact me, and I'll buy you a cookie someday!

PS. Thanks again for this great article! Keep up the great work :)!
