How Most Americans Are Secretly Being Poisoned Almost DailysteemCreated with Sketch.

There is mounting evidence that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are the culprit for many of the health issues Americans are facing today. Yesterday, I shared some research that links them to gastrointestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and leaky gut syndrome. These conditions have been on the rise, and it comes as no surprise when we consider how much of our food has been infiltrated with genetically modified crops.

If you're like most Americans, you probably regularly consume corn, soy, and canola, which are almost all genetically modified now. But you may never even see these listed on an ingredient label because they are often under different names.

Stats on the top GMOs grown in the U.S.

- About 90% of all corn is genetically engineered.

Hidden sources: high fructose corn syrup, modified food starch, citric acid, dextrin and dextrose, fructose, lactic acid, malt, mono- and diglycerides, monosodium glutamate, sorbitol, and starch

Additionally, if you eat meat, be aware GMO corn is the main ingredient in animal feed.

- 93% of all soy is genetically engineered.

Hidden sources: carob, emulsifiers, guar gum, natural flavors, shoyu, soy lecithin, soy protein concentrate or isolate, soybean oil, stabilizer, tamari, tempeh, texturized vegetable protein, vegetable broth, and vegetable gum

- About 90% of all canola is genetically engineered.

The Rise of GMO Crops in the U.S.

(HT stands for Herbicide Tolerant, and Bt for Bacillus thuringiensis, a soil-dwelling bacterium used to make certain GMOs)

Bt corn is created by taking Bacillus thuringiensis, splicing part of it's DNA, and inserting it into the corn’s DNA. Bacillus thuringiensis is sought after for this process because it naturally produces an insecticide called Bt-toxin. But since scientists have isolated this toxin, they are capable of engineering the corn to produce the toxin 1,000 times more than the bacteria would on its own.

The result? When an insect consumes part of the corn plant, holes form in its intestines, and it dies of blood poisoning. That being said, Bt toxin makes a very effective insecticide. This becomes a problem, however, when humans unknowingly consume it in their diets.

As I highlighted yesterday, this Bt toxin has been linked to IBS and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

In the U.S., IBS is estimated to affect as many as 25 to 45 million people, including children. But how common is Leaky Gut? Doctors, such as Josh Axe, estimate over half of the population is suffering from some degree of Leaky Gut.

Herbicide Tolerant Crops

Two of the most common types of Herbicide Tolerant (HT) crops are Glyphosate-tolerant and Glufosinate-tolerant crops. Since farmers spray their crops many times with herbicides, it becomes imperative to use crops that are tolerant to them.

How HT crops work:

1. Glyphosate-tolerant crops

Glyphosate herbicide, which is found in Roundup, kills weeds by blocking their EPSPS enzyme. One of the ways crops are made to be glyphosate-tolerant is by engineering them to contain a gene from a soil bacterium that produces a glyphosate degrading enzyme.

2. Glufosinate-tolerant crops

Glufosinate herbicide contains phosphinothricin. This ingredient kills weeds by blocking important enzyme's it needs to function. These crops are unharmed by phosphinothricin because they have been engineered to contain a gene from a bacterium that produces an enzyme to detoxify phosphinothricin.

Are You Consuming These GMO Foods?

Foods such as these are most likely to be from genetically engineered sources:

soda
candy
sweetened yogurt
bottled salad dressings
bread
bottled juice
boxed dinners
granola bars
cereal
pre-made baked goods
ketchup and other condiments
coffee creamer
energy drinks and sports drinks
ice cream

GMOs are not required to be labelled in the U.S. Therefore, the best way to avoid them is to buy organic or grow your own food.

Nice, informative post!
There's a way to tell gm foods by certain numbers on barcodes, too...I don't remember off hand, but it would be a nice addition to this if you or I could find that! It's not easy eating gmo free... But well worth it. There's definitely a major impact on health in my experience!

Hi @mommanatural ;)

This reference here says 8, I hate. It’s GMO! 9 is fine. Organic. There are also some barcode apps you can download.

I'm generally against genetic modification. Our relationship with foods and adaption to certain types of foods developed over thousands of years. Now food is changing it's make up so rapidly we don't have time to assess the long term impact on health before its part of our daily diets (by which I mean the diet of the majority). We are told certain levels of this or that ingredient are safe to eat, which means no discernable long term health impact, but can the studies really tell? It seems that poor dietry health is now the norm anyway so against what benchmark are the studies performed? Also even without GMO intensive breeding of crops has created varieties of corn and wheat that have much higher yields for corporations but are less healthy for the person eating it at the end. Thanks for sharing... I agree and try to avoid GMO wherever possible.

Don't even get me started. Ever since my tours in Viet Nam, I have loathed, abhorred, and detested the Man-Satan (Monsanto) Corporation. What most folks do not know is that the World Wildlife Fund PARTNERED with Man-Satan to turn the bulk of the former tropical rain forest of the Amazon Basin into a infested and heavily polluted Savannah; displacing indigenous peoples in the process.

Global Warming is an unfulfilled though highly plausible theory. Please to do NOT use it interchangeably with climate change. The horrors of the Amazon Basin is climate change that rears its ugly head, especially during hurricane season. Look up how Carribean hurricanes are formed and you will understand how the WWF and Man-Satan created Hurricane Sandy of a few years ago. Off the soap box for now.

An edit after glancing at some comments: GMO technology is retrovirology. It is the same genre of how HIV/AIDS was developed by the Robert Gallo team. Food is meant to be nutritionally dense. If grown in soil as opposed to hydroponics, et al. there has to be a rhizosphere and minerals.

Wow, I had not heard about Monsanto partnering with the World Wildlife Fund. Thanks for sharing this, it prompted me to look into it more. This is certainly a dangerous trend... turning parts of people's countries into GMO plantations, all the while destroying natural wildlife and habitat. I hope people stop giving to the WWF because they clearly are more concerned with money than helping the environment.

I have a background in fitness and nutrition. Not all GMO's are bad. Science has gone a long way to prove this. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be more testing. Many organics are covered in as much, if not more pesticides. Just because it says organic, doesn't mean it is either. I would say that people aren't healthy because of lifestyle choices. You can eat 1,000 calorie organic hamburger and still gain weight. There are definitely GMO's that are good. Just my input. Thank you for the post :)

You must be young because you are still drinking the kool-aid. :) You probably think the US government cares about you and Bill Gates is a saint. Ahhh,,,just poking at you.....you will figure it out eventually. Just remember, when you think you know something consider the source. If the government is pushing it then you know it is not in your best interest.

Nice post -- I especially like all the references.

I was stunned to hear of a holistic homeopath treating patients who were ill from gluphosate. She gave the a small homeopathic dose of gluphosate and their symptoms lessened markedly!

The things you can discover on steemit!

That's very interesting, @mhrose. If you happen to remember who that was, please share, I'd love to look into that more.
