Could This Be the Cause of Our Infertility Epidemic?steemCreated with Sketch.

Infertility is a major issue for Americans today. In fact, there are roughly 6.1 million women in the U.S. who are infertile, OR about 10% of the female population, according to the CDC.

If you've been following along with my posts most recently, then you already know GMOs have been implicated in the obesity epidemic and rise in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Today, I want to add infertility to the list of health hazards caused by GMOs.

So many men and women are struggling with infertility or impaired fertility on some level. Maybe even someone reading this can relate...

Couples are spending thousands of dollars on in vitro fertilization treatments in a desperate attempt to start a family. But there may be more to this issue than what lies on the surface.

Could infertility be caused by what we eat?

Research has shown there may be a link between decreased fertility and GMOs. In the article, "Say No to GMOs", Melissa Smith draws on genetically modified foods research done by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) using animals. She is the former executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, a leading health writer, and nutritionist. Thanks to the AAEM’s research, we have evidence GMOs can cause not only cause infertility but other serious health risks.

Smith writes, “In the area of reproduction, male rats fed GM [Genetically Modified] soy had changes in the structures and function of their testicles that influenced sperm development. When female rats were fed GM soy before they conceived and through pregnancy and lactation, more than 50 percent of their offspring died within three weeks of birth compared with only 10 percent of those whose mothers ate non-GM soy” (48).

Incredibly, not only did consuming GMOs reduce fertility, there was a significantly higher death rate in the offspring born to mothers who ate them.

If GMOs can cause infertility in rats, imagine how they may be impacting human fertility.

There are additional studies that have been done to uncover how GMOs affect fertility. In the article, “New Study Finds GMO Corn Makes Rats Infertile”, Christina Sarich discusses a study linking GMOs with infertility in rats. As Sarich explains, the study involved rats fed only GMO maize, and rats fed only non-GMO maize.

The results of the study revealed the rats who were fed non-GMO maize did not become infertile but the rats fed GMO maize were affected. In fact, many of these rats became 100% infertile.

‘An examination of the testes revealed necrosis (death) and desquamation (shedding) of the spermatogonial cells that are the foundation of sperm cells and thus male fertility – and all this after only 91 days of feeding.’ (Sarich, par. 7).

If GMOs affect the male testes of humans as they did the male rats in the study, we should be very hesitant to consume them, even for a short period of time.

These studies provide even more proof that GMOs pose a health threat to humans. If you'd like to learn more about these two studies I've highlighted, check them out in the sources below.

GMOs is only one of many things that can cause reproduction or fertility problems:

Alkylphenols, Bisphenol A, Organochlorine Pesticides (OCs), Phthalates, Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

Great point, @lugh. There are many things in our environment and food supply that are creating the fertility epidemic. Thanks for sharing this link

The first commercial sale of GMO foods was in 1994. A little over 20 years ago! We don't know enough about GMOs to deem them safe or chart the long term effects on human beings.

"By slipping it into our food without our knowledge, without any indication that there are genetically modified organisms in our food, we are now unwittingly part of a massive experiment."
David Suzuki

Very true, and the worst part of all is perhaps the fact the government is allowing this human/environment experiment. They have blocked gmo labeling legislation or slowed it over the years when clearly, the public has wanted gmos labelled. They have no incentive to allow gmo labeling, however, because they have helped further along gmo crop production with their massive subsidies.

The new postmodern human being these self-proclaimed engineers are cultivating isn't going to be an improvement, that much is certain.

Resteemed your article. This article was resteemed because you are part of the New Steemians project. You can learn more about it here: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gaman/new-steemians-project-launch

Quite informative. I will have to look deeper into this.

They say that "You are what you eat." I read a few articles way back about the study of how the the Asian population who's main staple was rice, found that the DNA found in rice was in the Asian culture. More studies will show more information...
On Jan 1, 1981 Yasuo NAGATO (and others) published: Variation of DNA content in Asian Rice
Other Researchers concluded that the activity of DNA transposons (particularly the excision process) is a major evolutionary force driving the generation of genetic diversity.
We as humans take the DNA of the food and put it in ourselves. It is fair to assume that the GMO seedless fruits that we consume will make us seedless.

Thank you for your comment, @oddmiliman. It totally makes sense what you're saying but I have never fully made this connection before. I have certainly seen evidence that the food we eat, such as gmos, can make us infertile. That makes you wonder, if seeds are engineered to grow faster or larger, could this element affect humans when they consume the plant?

I personally haven't found any studies to show yet. Eventually and hopefully we will see some.

Very nice @nataliejohnson to post this..GMO is truly bad for our fertility and general well being

Welcome @nataliejohnson will also post on similar topics and more as I do post a lot on natural alternative's
Find time to check my blog posts

Whatever happened to "You are what you eat"?... GMO food = GMO human. Thank you for covering this topic!

Exactly... The food we eat changes and becomes a part of our DNA
