Can GMOs Make You Fat? Shocking Studies Reveal the Truth
Could genetically modified organisms (GMOs) be partly to blame for the rising obesity epidemic? Dr. Joseph Mercola believes so. In case you're not familiar with him, Dr. Mercola is a renowned physician and New York Times best-selling author who works to educate people on health and wellness, particularly natural health. He is also very vocal about the dangers of GMOs.
GMO Studies in Lab Animals and Humans
In his article titled, Decade-Long Feeding Study Reveals Significant Health Hazards of Genetically Engineered Foods, he discusses a shocking 10-year animal feeding study that connects obesity and GMOs:
‘Animals fed a GE corn diet got fatter quicker and retained the weight compared to animals fed a non-GE grain diet. The studies were performed on rats, mice, pigs and salmon, achieving the same results.’ (Mercola, par. 4).
Besides obesity, blood toxicity is also a concern for everyone who consumes GMOs, even pregnant women and the unborn. Mercola points to a study done at Sherbrooke University Hospital in Quebec that measured Bt-toxin levels in the blood of women and fetuses.
- 93% of pregnant women and 67% of non-pregnant women had Bt-toxin in their blood.
- Bt-toxin was also found in 80% of fetal blood samples.
Bt-toxin, he warns, also may cause immune system reactions, fertility issues, and birth defects.
GMO Study in Farm Animals
Did you know, GMOs have been toxic to farm animals since their introduction?
In fact, the first GMO corn, called Bt176, proved to be detrimental to German dairy cows from 1997 to 2002. This long-term observation is discussed in Dr. Mercola’s article titled, Investigation Reveals First Commercialized GMO Maize Was Toxic to Farm Animals. The piece details a German dairy farmer’s switch to Bt176 for his cows in 1997. He gradually increased the Bt176 in the feed through 2002, and the results were shocking!
By 2002, 30% of the cows had fallen ill, and the death rate had reached 10%. “A number of cows were diagnosed with liver disease, mucosa problems, irregular heart function, mammary gland breaks…and general “abnormal behavior” suggesting chronic lack of energy,” he points out.
Most importantly, Dr. Mercola echoes a warning not to trust the U.S. government to keep you safe from GMOs. He explains that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not include Bt-toxin produced by Bt crops in their pesticide exposure analysis.
It is the EPA’s job to monitor pesticides humans are exposed to, and so this is a huge failure on their part. The strangest part of all is the EPA actually registers Bt crops as pesticides. Therefore, their statistics are completely inaccurate and misrepresent the true levels of pesticides citizens are being exposed to.

The effects of GMO on future generations is going to be horrific. There is a reason many countries refuse GMO crops to be grown in their country. The US government has been so corrupted by the corporations they ceased having the welfare of their citizens at heart a long time ago. I'm fairly sure the criminals in Congress and the Senate don't eat GMO food, why would they? They know it's bad.
Good read! The more we get the word out the better. We live in a highly toxic environment! There is chemicals, hormones, pesticides and GMO's in our food supply, it's almost a full time job to avoid these things now days. To add to that we get blasted with blue light and EMF's. All of this makes a cocktail of thing that makes humans sick, fat and unhealthy like never before. Cancer and disease rates are shocking

Oh I don't trust the US govt at all. The FDA and the EPA are basically useful idiots for the likes of Monsanto, Bayer, and other Agro-chemical companies who pay lobbyists and buy off politicians and bureaucrats to further their agenda and add to their profits.

I've read theories that these companies want us getting sick because some of the ones involved in GE products also manufacture expensive drugs (such as cancer treatment) that they make a killing off of. I don't know how much truth there is to that but I won't write it off as most anything is possible in this crazy world.
I'm happy to see more people buying organic / non-GMO foods because as the demand grows for those products and shrinks for unhealthier ones, the big companies will be forced to behave better (I hope). It's expensive to buy all organic groceries right now so in my household we try and get mostly organic / non-GMO meats and veggies and we also try to cook at home and minimize consumption of processed foods. However, it's beyond our budget to go all organic / non-GMO at this point. Hopefully some day that won't be the case.
Hi @cryptokeepr, I've heard that, too, about the same companies making us sick with the food supply also own drug companies. I can certainly relate to you when it comes to trying to buy all organic. For me, just finding all organically grown produce that I normally eat is practically impossible unless you are having it shipped to your house for a steep price.
There are a few things I always buy organic, like salad greens but many times I have to buy conventionally grown fruits and vegetables because that is all that's available. I hope to grow most of my food eventually but I'm working on that goal in short steps.

I grew a garden for a few years but it was a lot of work and I don't have the time for it at this point in my life. As far as fruits and veggies are concerned, we buy organic stuff if the regular stuff has a normally high pesticide content like strawberries and leafy greens.
