Sugar is one of sweet-tasting substance and is soluble carbohydrate. It is found in many forms. These forms of sugar are sucrose, fructose and lactose.

In today’s fast-paced life, it is very hard to maintain the balance of nutrients in our diet. One of the key nutrient is sugar which is very important for cell life. But if we consume too much sugar, it has several health risks which include diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.

The recommended amount of sugar by American Heart Association is 9 teaspoons for men per day while the average personal use of sugar is more than double i.e. 20 teaspoons per day.

We are even not sure that how much sugar we are consuming on daily basis. It is very important to know that what is amount of sugar in our mostly used foods.

Sweet cereals, soda, chocolate are high sources of sugar. Fruits also contain sugar which is natural so less harmful.

Below are everyday foods and drinks and their sugar contents. It will help to know sugar contents of foods before making choice to consume them.

Chocolate bars:

There is wide variety of chocolates available in the market and sugar content varies. Some of them have low sugar contents like dark or raw chocolate. One Snicker bar chocolate has 57 g of sugar, Milky Way bar 58 g, 3 Musketeers bar 60 g, Dove chocolate 37 g, Butterfinger bar 60 g, Hershey Milk chocolate 43 g and Twix bar has 57 g of sugar.

Soft Drinks:

Consuming too much soft drink add most of the daily sugar intake and is cause of heart diseases. One can of Coca-Cola contains 7.25 teaspoons of sugar, one can of Red Bull has 5.35 teaspoon and one can of Sprite contains 7.61 teaspoons of sugar.

Cereals:

In United States, cereals are most commonly used food taken in breakfast. Some of these cereals have excessive amount of sugar. 100 gm of Corn Flakes have 1.93 teaspoons of sugar, 100 gm of Alpen has 4 teaspoons of sugar, cocoa Krispies contains 7.83 teaspoons of sugar, 100 gm of Raisin Bran contains 6.35 teaspoons of sugar and 100 gm of Frosted Flakes has 7.12 teaspoon of sugar.

Most of the cereals have 56% more sugar and 50% more sodium.

Fruits:

Fructose is commonly found in fruits. Fresh fruits contain no added sugar. Eating fruit is sign of healthy life but sugar in fruit has adverse effects of human health.
100 gm serving of mangoes have 2.77 teaspoons of sugar, bananas have 2.48 teaspoons, apples have 2.11 teaspoons, pineapples have 2 teaspoons, grapes have 3.14 teaspoons, lemons have 0.5 teaspoon, apricot have 1.87 teaspoons, raspberries have 0.9 teaspoons, blueberries have 2.02 teaspoons and tomatoes have 0.53 teaspoons of sugar.

Back in 2015 i was diagnosed with the hypertension due to hectic routine of university life. After spending 15 days in the hospital i came to know that i seriously need to balance my life style, since then i am living a very peaceful and healthy life. Reason behind all this, i take very small amount of SALT and SUGAR in my food. This is really informative,
