Monsanto/Bayer in for More Losses as Roundup Gets Banned in Los Angeles

in #health6 years ago (edited)

Bayer stocks recently saw a selling off after a second court case ruled Roundup causes cancer. With that and the compensation of millions to pay up in this and other forthcoming cases, the company is going to be bleeding financially.

What's more, are the losses they will have from sales of their Roundup poison. Los Angeles county is an area that is listening to the sentiment of the people and their dislike of the Roundup poison. A jury is ruling against Monsanto/Bayer, and so too are counties ruling against allowing the sale of a serious poison in their communities.

LA county authorities have now banned all use of the notorious glyphosate product, otherwise known as Roundup. Kathryn Barger of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said:

"I am asking county departments to stop the use of this herbicide until public health and environmental professionals can determine if it’s safe for further use in L.A. County and explore alternative methods for vegetation management."

This comes after a San Francisco court ruling that found Roundup was a "substantial factor" in causing cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, to 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman. He developed the lymphoma after using Roundup on his property for decades.

Bayer bought up Monsanto about a year ago, and has since had to deal with the court rulings against Monsanto's flagship weedkiller product, Roundup. It seems it kills more than just weeds, albeit at a slower rate than weeds die off. Additionally, after it's used, it goes into the water table and is consumed by everyone in various amounts.

The first case punish the notorious herbicide came last August when Dewayne Johnson was first awarded $289 million after the jury concluded glyphosate caused his non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This caused a great drop in the Bayer shares. An appeals court later reduced the payout to $78 million.

The good news though, is that this sets a precedant, and there are now more than 9,300 similar lawsuits that are seeking to hold Monsanto/Bayer accountable for producing a cancer-causing herbicide that they've known about for decades.

LA county cited "a growing body of scientific study" in their board motion to halt glyphosate use, and asked the Department of Public Works to find an alternative within 30 days. Hopefully they do switch to something else, anything else would probably be better than Roundup.

Scientists have found that people heavily exposed to glyphosate had a 41% higher risk to develop developing non-Hodgkins lymphoma, compared to non-exposed people. This study contradicts the EPA's former assessment in 2016 that Roundup had "low toxicity for humans".

By contrast, in 2015 the WHO did an 11-country study and found that glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic to humans". In 2017, California added glyphosate to a list of chemicals "known to cause cancer".

Bayer, however, still maintains that the Monsanto-created product is "safe". Of course they would say that, since it's their product now and they want to keep making money, not admit it's a poison and pretty much admit guilt for any future trials where billions are on the line.

If 9,000 trials aware each person a minimum of $50 million each, that would total $450 billion for Bayer to cough up. That would bleed them pretty dry. I hope it happens. I hope they get shut down in the process of paying people who have to endure so much misery because a harmful product was sold as "safe".

That's not to say we should know better, considering it kills plants. How safe can that really be for other biological substances. Just because something doesn't get eradicated immediately, doesn't mean there won't be long-term effects that manifest over time as the cells in the body get eradicated or mutated from such a poison. We aren't too wise sometimes us humans, as we still pollute and poison ourselves.

We don't need governments to ban things (in an ideal world), if we would just care more and become more aware of what we're doing to ourselves. But when profit is involved, businesses don't give a shit most of the time. And many people are just trying to get by, buying what's cheap, like GMO food, and don't think of the poison they are ingesting.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Glad to see this health disaster gaining more acknowledgement. The Monsanto dynasty has been an evil one since day one when they were an instrumental cog in the slavery trade, transporting their prisoner/slaves across the ocean.

I can't help wondering why Bayer bought them, suspecting that it was to take the financial shit storm coming off of Monsanto's shoulders.

Yeah, the tide seems to be turning ;) Bayer wanted the profits they generate from their hot selling products bought by stupid ppl.

A nice "retired military man" who lives next to us didn't want to fool with the weeds in his driveway, so he treated them with RoundUp. Of course, we live on a slope, and the rain washed some of it downhill into a space we HAVE used as a vegetable garden... where several nice 15-year old lilac bushes ended up dying last year.

Thankfully, we were NOT growing veggies there because we were moving to raised beds in a different part of the yard.

Although the California rulings might seem "minor," they do represent a sort of turning of the tide to me... at some point, we will reach a tipping point where the "pushback" from the greater public will overpower all these organizations' and the governments that sweep the information under the rug's ability to keep up.

"Nice" indeed. Humans wanting the quick and easy way out, bombing the shit out of something they don't like :P Military style. Why bother doing the work when a chemical can just kill it for you. Side effects? I don't care, I'm lazy. Things seem to be turning for them indeed, the green ecological awareness is growing.

Monsanto losing these cases warms my heart.

Indeed it is comforting.

How long will it take to stop this shitty company Monsanto?? Is there Any Government on this Planet, who has the Power to speak the truth and Stop this company, who is killing People like insects?? God damn!

People need to unite against evil corps to stop them, easily by stopping to buy them. Peer pressure, stop working for corrupted institutions... but paychecks rule many decisions.

Yes, this damn paychecks make us to slaves.

I'm surprised that with the WHO statement of a few months ago that lots of national governments haven't banned it yet.

Big Ag must be almost as powerful (and have as many pols on the take) as big pharma.

Well give it another decade then maybe :/

You reap what you sow :)
