World Water Day....Leave no one behind

in #health6 years ago

World water day is celebrated 22 March every year. It was designed as a means of bringing focus and attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The theme for this year 2019 is "LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND".

A lot of persons have undermined the importance of taking water for their health. The human body is made up of about 70% water. It needs water for most of its life functions. Studies has shown that an adult human can survive without food for up to four weeks but not without water after a few days. Water; the tasteless, odourless and colourless universal solvent is not gender, religion or race sensitive. A lot of illnesses can be prevented by taking adequate clean water when necessary. Water helps to flush the system and get rid of toxins.

Water does more than just quench thirst. It helps the body to maintain the amounts of moisture needed for proper functioning of organs and cells. Water serves as lubricant and helps to cushion the joints. Water aids digestion process, removal of waste as well as prevent dehydration. A dehydrated person shows one or more of these signs: dry skin and mouth, sunken eyes, fatigue, cold hands and feet and a rise in temperature. This could lead to many other illnesses if not corrected quickly.

A lot of people are concerned about getting dehydrated. Over hydration could also become a problem. Although it is rare. This problem occurs when one drinks excess water too fast. It results in dilution of salts and other electrolytes in the body. Excess water makes the cells swell. This is more common with people with certain kidney problems and those with health conditions that affect the body's ability to absorb water and other fluids or excrete excess.

Water is one of the six classes of food. Many of the fruits we eat are rich store of water and other vitamins. Many have argued whether water should be classified as food. Irrespective of the classification it falls under, it doesn't change its relevance. Health authorities have recommended about 2 litres of water to be taken every day. Leave no one behind. Keep spreading the word and drink your way to good health and long life 🥂
