The Challenge of Taking Care of a Cancer Patient

Cancer is among the top causes of deaths globally, and the fact that there's no treatment other than chemotherapy, survival rate is not that high. Especially if someone was already afflicted once, and survived, there is a possibility of its recurrence.

The hardship when a family member was afflicted by cancer

I mentioned it already before, my mother died of cancer. We never knew it was cancer and I admit, there's a bit of blame within me towards her doctors then. They had undergone her to different laboratory tests, but how come they are unable to recommend her to undergo CT Scan. Before learning about the diagnosis, it's been difficult because of different illnesses appearing after another. When it was declared by the doctor that she's terminally ill with cancer, it's like a huge rock fell upon us. What more seeing your loved one suffering but you can't do anything to ease her from pain. It's not actually the hardship of taking care of a cancer patient that's difficult. Rather, the emotional pain of seeing the person in great pain is even more difficult, especially when the patient is crying and shouting from pain, and when he or she is catching her breath.

Survivors may experience recurrence

Glad to know some cancer patients survived. However, there is a possibility of its relapse. My father's friend who's wife had cancer became disease free. That was the same time when my mother battled cancer too. After few years, the cancer recurred which eventually led to her death.

Treatments

The most common treatment for cancer is chemoteraphy, but there's a possibility the patient will feel weaker because it can kill both good and bad cells. Radiation and surgery is also advised but that's for those at early stage. I know of an alternative treatment which my mother had undergone. Though, I cannot elaborate that now since I almost forgot the explanations regarding it. Hopefully, it would be widely available someday.

Indeed, it's not easy to take care of patients with cancer. But they need our love. We should show compassion towards them. Show some moral support which encourages them o fight with cancer and end up triumphant.
