Calls for New Taxation on Sugar- Nothing more than a Police State.

in #health7 years ago

The Fat Police previously the anti smoking lobby, and before that the moral indignant who bought in drink driving laws. They are at it again, this time attacking the use of sugar, as if personal responsibility is not enough. Calling for 20% or above taxation of sugar, and further higher taxation on sugary drinks, it is nothing new. The nanny state seeks another way to tax us, while claiming it is for our own benefit.

Healthy eating, portion control and exercising, all require a personal motivation, and cannot be legislated by government. The moral gaggle of health professionals, and public health officials now seek to rummage through our shopping trolleys, telling us we need to donate more to the government if we are fat or eating sugar.

The same morons who lead the anti smoking, and anti drink driving lobbies, are now up in arms that our children are getting fatter. They seek money for advertising messages promoting the dangers of eating and drinking sugar. Why, it is so they can move into bigger offices, and have jobs telling us what to do with our lives. They seek to make the new enemy, sugar.

The combined minds of these well wishers, has come up with a plan to tax us more. They seek to save billions in health costs bought on by the menace of sugar. Claiming that massive amounts of strokes, diabetics and heart disease can be prevented by a 20% reduction is sugar usage across the community. The food industry uses sugar and salt, cheap flavor enhancement to drive up the consumption of rubbish nutrient scarce food products. However, we are now lead to believe that by paying the government more in a sugar tax, we will all be saving billions.

Research does not back up the idea, that by demonizing one food group, we will overcome obesity. The poorest in our society, are the ones who will be most affected. Once again, the moral few seek to impose their will onto the rest of us. Where will they draw the line? Will it be refined sugars that are taxed, will fruit sugars be exempted? Apple juice contains more calories than cocacola in a serving half the size, yet i doubt these fat police will be seeking to tax fruit sugars. Within months the food producers will convert to the use of fruit sugars, avoiding the tax and hiding the truth from consumers.

Public health interventions, often assume an incorrect response by the public when they formulate these plans to attack us with taxation. Smoking taxes, have not bought about the assumed decrease in smoking rates. France and Mexico are 2 countries that have tried a sugar tax, and both have found that consumption whilst initially down up to 6% soon rises again and then increases beyond the previous recorded levels.

Soon the fat police will be proposing banning advertising to certain markets and at certain times, yet again the food producers will not take this lying down, they will simply shift their marketing into other areas. It seems our teenagers are allowed unlimited viewing of blood and guts in violent television programming, but will soon be denied advertising for a cheeseburger and coke. Of course our children spend more time watching the internet than TV anyway, so where will the marketing be moved too?

Remember after your children get their degrees, they will only be able to find jobs at Macdonalds, and Food Courts, so eventually they will see it all anyway.

Make way for the next Moral Intervention into your lifestyle

^___^ Thank you (°°).!

Well, if this was the govern-cement's goals, they could just stop subsidizing the production of HFC (high fructose corn syrup) We give that corporation lots of tax dollars every year to continue making the shit.

Further, we artificially raise sugar prices by strict tariffs so that sugar farmers "don't go out of business".

So, although some of these people fighting for this tax may actually believe they are helping, they instead are being useful idiots helping drum up support for a new tax.

good to meet you builder - i follow you now

I'm all for lowering taxes but as a libertarian, minarchist I think sales tax should be the least of our concerns. A higher sales tax would make sense in a society without an income tax, you only pay for the amount that you consume and it would be more equal.

ex. You like buying new cars and driving on the public roads, you end up paying more taxes to maintain the roads

So here we have a backward system that's subsidizing the fuck out the corn production industry to produce all of this cheap sugar then, they turn around and raise the price because sugar is killing a lot of poor people who are becoming obese and straining the health insurance system.
At some point, we actually reach the correct free market price sugar would be if the government didn't subsidize the corn/ sugar industry in the first place, but now we still have the cost of healthcare to deal with because the FDA was bribed to recommend a terrible low-fat high carb diet to Americans for years because the sugar industry paid scientist to lie about the health concerns in studies that the FDA used back in the 1960s. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/13/well/eat/how-the-sugar-industry-shifted-blame-to-fat.html

Things that are taxed most at the counter right now are products that are killing our society, alcohol, cigarettes, sugar are all products that have caused a huge strain the health care system which is now a publicly subsidized mess.

I hope something cuts down on sugar consumption, sugar has been proven to be just as harmful as alcohol and I'm tired off watching my family and country poison themselves with the shit for "mouth pleasure" everydayt

Let that rant out @daydreams4rock! 😁

thanks @choogirl - glad you came to read my ranting and raving - rock on my friend

There are much better ways to raise revenue for the health care system. For a start religious institutions do not currently pay tax. The damage that religion does to the overall mental health of people, they create drug addicts, alcoholics, and countless abused. With current numbers of close to 50% of people in Australia that have no religious affiliation. Fact is the government will screw us anyway, with it's constant pandering to minorities.

I know it's not that simple, just saying.

Cheers.

i like your thinking -- rock on my friend

Did you know the largest user of sugar in Australia is Coca-cola (amital)and they don't use Australian sugar. No revenue from them. Sad state of affairs never simple.

thanks for the information, it is incredible that they don't use our sugar, that shows how crazy the free trade policies of our government have become. Thanks for your comment and connection

I could give many examples of failed policy (on all sides) There just all self serving assholes. To fix it we need to start again. I feel so suffocated by the constant regulation of society. Mainly caused to control us and line to pockets of the corrupt pollies.

There are many examples of failed policy, until we make the pollies accountable, they will continue to line there pockets at the expense of the hard working people of this country. Pollies cannot see beyond there big fat wooden noses. Cheers

The nanny state seeks another way to tax us, while claiming it is for our own benefit.

Well, the sugar tax has proven to be working in several contries. So even if "health" is not the real goal, it is reached.

That has nothing to do with police state. Police state is was resulted from all that terror hysterics, that also kills a lot of people.

Would Stalin's Russia be a police state?
Well, The US has sent more people to slave camps than Stalin.
And death by police is on the rise.

A person can be detained without trial, indefinitely. NDAA
And now, the police can enter certain homes without a warrant and without knocking.
There are so many laws that a lawyers says they can follow anyone around for a day and find that they have committed at least three felonies. You aren't innocent, you just haven't been caught yet.

So, at what point does this become a police state?

Also, for the sugar tax to work, there would need to be a competing product that wasn't taxed. There really isn't much of the better stuff in stores or restaurants.

Huh? I thought the point of the free market is to provide that? If sugar gets more expensive, other products will either get used or crop up. And yes, there already are other products.

So, at what point does this become a police state?

All what you listed could be seen as a brick on the Police State Wall. But none of that has anything to do with a sugar tax. Someof it stems to the preference of religion above science ("war on drugs"), but most of it is based on (the usage of) the terror hysterics. Muslim terrorists are the given reason for all those things, even if you can't fight them with that and it is a hundred times more expensive then saving lifes in other places (see my post)

Huh? I thought the point of the free market is to provide that?

What free market?
Soda is one of the most heavily subsidized industries in The US.

If you want to use sugar instead of HFC you have to pay a premium in The US.

Further, shelf space at a store doesn't come for free. You don't just make a product and then hope that stores will order it. You have to pay for shelf space. And in that, you have to compete with the subsidized soda industry.

But anyway, at least you can get water at most restaurants.

Comment sucked up by the voids of cyberspace :( So again:

HFC? What is that? Please keep in mind that a lot of people are living on the other side of an ocean in another language and cannot understand your shorts.

What free market?

Taxes and subsidies are in effect the same - just on opposing sides.
So if you are against taxes, you are also for subsidies, or at least not decreasing them.
But that would also mean you are for giving big companies taxpayer money to make those tax payers more miserable (and health care more expensive).

Since I don't think you are, the only solution halfway inline with your wants seems to be to want subsidies at zero, but I cant find that anywhere.

HFC - High fructose corn syrup.
It is made from corn through a very intense process.
It is very expensive compared to sugar (if you buy it outside The US, like in Mexico) but it is subsidized by The US govern-cement.
And so, this very unhealthy substance is in almost all soda in america.

I am against taxes and against subsidies.
