一輪の霜の薔薇より年明くる
ichirin no shimo no bara yori toshi akuru
a lone
frosty rose
the new year begins

Shuoshi was a modern poet, born in 1892, but I wonder if he wasn't referring to the traditional New Year date. In the old Japanese calendar, New Years would have fallen at the beginning of spring, so the idea of seeing flowers blooming with the New Year was not a strange one. In our image here, it still must be been quite cold, giving us a frosty rose.

What is ichirin? I wonder if it means a rose? By the way, that it is a beautiful picture!
Good guess, but no. ichirin means one flower. bara is rose.
I agree. I wanted a woodblock print as usual, but couldn't find any I liked, so off to the CC licensed photos on Flickr. Lots of good ones there.

haha well, you'll have to take that up with the language police. Maybe we can petition to have the two words switched ;) Technically two words. ichi is one and rin is the counter word for flowers (and wheels).
I am gonna write straight to the president of Japan and require they make changes to the language haha!
Ichirin would be an awesome word for a rose, but now I see that rin is many roses haha so complicated!
no, it's just a counter. So whenever we count flowers we use it. 1 rin, 2 rin. Think of counters like the group words we use in english. a block of cheese, a head a lettuce, a (my favorite) murder of crows.
Anyway, I support your idea. We should write a letter!
