我死なば墓守となれきりぎりす
ware shinaba haka mori to nare kirigirisu


after I die
guard my grave
cricket

There is some thought that this might be Issa's death poem, but as far as I'm aware researchers are divided on that idea. At any rate, this is one of Issa's more playful verses, talking to his insect friends. Issa's kindness towards all the creatures in nature is one of the reasons for his enduring popularity in Japan.

Oh this is a lovely little haiku. I don't have much experience with them, but I love that so much is said with so few words. "Cricket." Awesome :D

That's the beauty of them: hinting at the world in just a few words. Hope I can get you hooked on the short verses :)
