Less guns does not equal less murders

in #guns6 years ago

So we had another school shooting yesterday in Santa Fe Texas where a student with a gun allegedly entered the school, shot up a classroom and killed 10 people.

Now we're seeing the talking heads at the Main Stream Media(MSM) bring up gun control and the debate will sure be focused on "assault" rifles, raising the minimum age to buy a gun and why we even need these types of high capacity guns in the country to begin with.

I know gun control is a complicated issue and the MSM likes to just focus on the guns rather than the person behind the guns pulling the trigger because lets face it most of these mass murders are on some kind anti-depressant or had a history of mental health issues in the past.

36 School shooters/school related violence committed by those under the influence of psychiatric drugs

Fact: At least 36 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by those taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs resulting in 172 wounded and 80 killed (in other school shootings, information about their drug use was never made public—neither confirming or refuting if they were under the influence of prescribed drugs). The most important fact about this list, is that these are only cases where the information about their psychiatric drug use was made public.

But lets focus on one particular issue that comes up quite a bit in these gun control debates.

I am an American and I've noticed that foreigners always like to chime in with their 2 cents, especially Europeans, and say something like this "Americans need better gun control laws, we enacted gun control laws a long time ago and now crime is way down in our country, these senseless murders are caused by weak gun laws and if America would just enact strong gun control laws you wouldn't have all these mass shootings, etc, etc"

So are guns actually a major factor in murders? I have no doubt a large portion of murders in the United States was with a gun but does that actually mean guns cause more murders to happen. If true we should see a direct correlations between the amount of guns in the a country versus the amount of murders in a country.

The chart below shows which countries own the most guns and America is way out in the lead when it comes to gun ownership. There is almost a gun for every American citizen, this place is crawling with guns :) The murder rate must be the highest in the world according to this logic.

Look at the chart below and compare it to the chart below. Notice the countries with the highest murder rates are not on the list above. All these countries with high murder rates have tough laws against citizens owning guns.

It seems obvious that other factors are involved in these countries with high murder rates and citizens owning guns does not mean the murder rate is going explode. Sure murdering someone with a gun is easier than using a knife but that does't mean criminals are going to stop murdering people just because it's harder to do now. The chart above illustrates that very well.

Even Brazil with one of the highest murder rates in the world is starting to come around and realize guns that citizens owning guns might actually reduce crime.

People Are Ready to Buy Some Guns in the World’s Murder Capital

In the world’s most murderous country, gun control is starting to lose its appeal.

Desperate Brazilians are wondering whether they’d be better off armed, given that around 60,000 of their compatriots are killed each year. Polls show support for gun ownership gaining ground. In an election year, politicians are paying attention.

One of the candidates leading the field for October’s 2018 presidential election -- hardline conservative Jair Bolsonaro -- has promised to allow law-abiding citizens to arm themselves, a popular pledge in the nation with by far the most homicides of the entire world. Even before then, Congress may debate legislation to overturn the “disarmament statute,” a law that severely restricts civilian ownership of guns, and virtually bans their carry. The proposal would allow Brazilians with clean criminal records who pass psychological and firearm exams to buy up to six weapons and to carry them.

The people of Brazil would be wise to educate themselves on the need for having an armed population protect themselves against deadly threats. It would be a hard pill to swallow if the people of Brazil armed themselves and murders finally started to decline.

What happens when they start using forks, you know the kind of forks we eat with, do we then ban them?

The UK is trying that with knives.

Pretty soon the government there will be the only ones allowed to cut up your meat for supper :P

Oi you, I moved from that shitehole to Poland, lol so they will not be cutting up my meat any time soon, or in my lifetime.

"This type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries ... with this kind of frequency".

London seems to be having a problem with mass violence this year.

'SENSELESS VIOLENCE' London stabbings 2018 – London knife crime statistics including the Barking, Ruislip and Hackney attacks

At least 36 people have been fatally stabbed - and 62 overall killed - in London since the beginning of the year.

Met Police records show 37, 443 recorded knife offences and 6,694 recorded gun offences across the UK in the year up to September 2017.

In London, the problem was even more pronounced than the rest of the country, with 12,980 knife crimes taking place in the capital - 2,452 more than the equivalent year.

Four teenagers were stabbed to death in London on New Year's Eve alone, and 22 were killed in March - meaning the capital now has a higher murder rate than New York

A shocking night of violence took place on February 20, 2018, with six people reportedly stabbed in North London.

Russell Jones, 23, became the eighth person to die in a week after being ambushed outside shops near Ponders End station in Enfield on Saturday, March 17.

Stabbings in London are at their highest level in six years, with a 23 per cent rise from the previous year.

The media sensationalized these mass shootings when statically you have a better chance of getting struck by lightening or being stabbed to death in London.

Though a crazed citizen with a knife is very unlikely to kill more people than a crazed person with a gun. I think it is the frequency of mass shootings that occur in the USA that is the biggest concern. One crazy person with an automatic weapon can kill many people in a crowded place in one foul swoop. I know this is not just confined to the USA, but the frequency in your country seems particularly high.

What would you suggest to combat the relatively high number of mass shootings if gun control is not the answer?

That is way more injured and killed then any mass school shooting here in the States.
