Growth-ideas: A Dedicated Space For Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Games Like @papa-pepper Survival Game With Stats And TimerssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #growth-ideas7 years ago (edited)

So it hit me after @natator88 and I survived round 1 of @papa-pepper survival game season 2. This is a lot of fun. I had the idea, some time ago, of writing a choose-your-own adventure story that I would post here. I forget about it and was reminded about it by a comment by @triverse who said he was thinking of making one. Why is this an idea that different people have? Because it works so well with this site. And it is something that captures attention. This is something that a lot of people have fond nostalgic memories of and this site, or an app, can be the home for them. Think about it, how can it not go viral, remember choose your own adventure books, they are back and you can now win prizes for playing them. This can be one of the things that makes this site unique from every other blog and social media site that is fun and engaging.

I'm pretty exited about this. We can have an app or a dedicated section where users sign up for upcoming games, have stats about how well they did and a timer before they have to make their next decision. I would even go as far as suggesting given 1-2% of the reward pool to this. We will need to reward the people who run them. @papa-pepper is working his butt off on his game and he is posting about it every day consistently. There can be multiple games running at the same time. You can be a detective in one, a time traveller in another. I would help with a scifi one if it was wanted.

This could easily be done on the blockchain, as we are already technically doing it, we just need UI updates to make it easier for the people who want to run them and more appealing for those who join. It would not cost much. And the more features we add to it, the more it can stand as its own thing. A mix of writing and gaming, one that works well with this site and could really gain traction.

Got an idea for a name. Right now steemadventures comes to mind but that can be better.

I like the idea of an interactive game space here on steemit! Like you said, we'd need to think of a reward for the moderators because @papa-pepper is investing a lot of time and effort into his #steempocalypse.

Just brainstorming here - could the moderator keep 50% of the payouts, and the other 50% goes to a graded payout for the participants? Something like what papa-pepper does, 10 steem for first-round exiters, 25 for the second, and so forth.

I'd volunteer to run one. My areas of (semi) expertise are statistics, herpetology, hockey, tennis, Skyrim, and Assassin's Creed, if that helps at all!

Hmmm.... "Herpetology Hockey?"

It just doesn't sound fair. They are all cold-blooded...

Well played @papa-pepper, well played.

I actually would still play it!

Yeah and his work shows.

We can do that now with your payouts, you split the payout and then divide the rewards after when you get them. But again it is a lot of work as you have to do everything manually.

Sweet, maybe you could do when where you get stuck in this work with giant creatures that all fall under the herpetology classification and depending on their behaviour (which you have expertise in) you will have to try and survive.

And sweet Assassin Creed and Skyrim, team repstyle is now more awesome.

Integrating Steem into games is a natural. I wonder if some dev out there could get a classic like Oregon Trail running on the blockchain.
Action choices could be votes, and the accruing Steem from all players could reward those who finish the game.
Once the tools & format are established people could develop their own games by providing new text & graphics, essentially just "skinning" a working system.

Yeah, upvote for Oregon Trail!

I always wanted to play Oregon Trail, one that I missed. That is a good idea, if we can get the tools ready people can make their own.

Sounds like a great idea to me

Thanks @andrarchy, I'm thinking of a few ideas like the option to upload a few days at a time in case the person running the game can't be on consistently at the time needed and a status bar/inventory that affects the options the place choose from. If it is run like @papa-pepper survival, as a game where people make one choice every 24 hours, it will encourage users to visit this site at least once a day.

@Whatageek, I think you misspelled my name again. lol

I still want to do the Choose Your Own Adventure thing, if someone else beats me to it, great - the winners are the fans that get to experience them.

The problem I see with the current limitations of @Steemit is that the adventure would have to be posted quite quickly to stay ahead of players going through it at that moment (a post per "page" that leads to another post with more choices).

If we had some kind of scoring system available it would certainly help keep people interested, entice multiple play through sessions, and probably bring attention to the project (which would be awesome).

I am thinking to get something started it could be about 20 to 30 posts long (just like the books that spawned this idea, no cheating by going forward or back when you mess up). It wouldn't be too hard to set that up. Maybe a simple adventure exploring a cave with an encounter or two that could produce a little bit of a maze aspect.

That is using current Steemit limitations.

The stats idea you mention is a great idea. Leaderboards, badges, etc could be created to keep players taking on new challenges as they become available. That could definitely be something that piques the interest of gamers - just look at how achievements changed console gaming for Xbox and Playstation gamers - people are playing games they don't care about just to get that next achievement or points for their account so they can brag to their friends.

Okay @triverse it is not my fault. I made a cautious effort to get it right and noticed that, for some reason, it auto-corrects to traverse. I will fix it after this comment. You can call me @whatigeek if it helps :p

You bring up a good point with the completed stories and replays. What I am thinking is ones like @papa-pepper survival game that is 'live' and you have to make your choice within 24 hours and the story continues until you have on survivor left. But maybe there is a way you can make one completed with rewards that people can replay.

You could make a fun book now with posts. But it doesn't have as many gamification aspects.

Speaking of gamification, steemit has announced plans to add gamification to the site. You are right about the achievements, I think it gives players direction and it can be relaxing to focus on a goal.

No worries on the name. I think for a long time before mentioning it because I think I sound like a jerk saying something.

I would love to see more gamification of Steemit as it can only help more people find the site.

No man it's your name, it should be spelled right. It is literally only your name that spell-check has an issue with, I have fixed it on different posts, this one got away from me. If it happens again you know why.

Yeah it was mentioned on the roadmap. The next big one should be communities in a month or two.

I blame the name thing on that SUV that is called Traverse. Lol

Communities could be awesome. Right now categories are not working as well as they should.
