Gridcoin Community Hangout #019

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

A huge thank you to @cm-steem for regularly hosting the Gridcoin hangouts! Please give him a follow!

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Why are we holding these hangouts?

A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topic suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Proposed time for Gridcoin Hangout #019:

9PM GMT 17th Dec 2016.

Maybe you can discuss a solution for the hangout release delay. As the hangouts are supposed to be for the community everyone should be able to inform himself about the discussions taking place in the hangouts in a timely manner. If that is not the case I can see the lack of transparency beeing counter-productive.
For all I care you can release the recordings unedited if that means that they are released sooner.
Another idea is to only pay gridcoin for hangouts released within a week after recording them. It is not that I think you don't deserve the compensation, I just think it should be made sure the hangouts are available soon after recording. Otherwise I don't see the benefits.

I am not able to join todays hangout.
Have fun, huppdiwupp

We usually post the RSVP threads a week in advance, everyone is free to post topic suggestions.

There are occasionally severe microphone issues that would otherwise be annoying.

You should try to attend in person if you can, every attendee can record the hangout through the mumble client - raw recordings can be shared this way.

I don't agree with having to pay within a week of creation, because it being late does not negate the fact that work was spent on it.

I think scaling back from weekly to once a fortnight could reduce editing load & we could even do time limits on discussions if there is a large attendance.

I just think it should be made sure the hangouts are available soon after recording. Otherwise I don't see the benefits.

I agree if there is a poll that we talk about & talk to the later listening audience regarding the poll, it'll likely be over by the time they listen. To be fair though, the hangout shouldn't be your primary source of Gridcoin related news. Use IRC, Telegram, Slack, Cryptocointalk, Twitter, Reddit, etc.

After the recent discussions about coinpayments, I did some digging and there appears to be a free and open-source crypto marketplace solution:

https://gourl.io/

They already support many altcoins... would probably be pretty easy to add us to the mix. Then we could set up our own shop on the site, and have something to point potential sales partners towards. :D

Pretty cool find! IMO, we should go with this over coinpayments.net (too high requirements for remaining on their site & expensive).

team gridcoin won the gold medal in season 2016 on formula-boinc.org (after position 5 in 2015) https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@cm-steem/team-gridcoin-came-1st-in-the-2016-formulaboinc-challenge

new BOINC 7.6.33 -> recommended version for Windows and Mac

status about recent (BURP, WCG) + upcoming challenges (Collatz, Moo)

Apparently there is a bug in this version of Steemit: when you populate all five tag fields, the system only picks the first one. Check it out for yourself: this post isn't visible under any tag listed, except Gridcoin. With four tags, it uses all of them, like it should.

Wow, that's quite the issue D:
