Gridcoin Whitelist ProposalssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gridcoin7 years ago

The following are my suggestions for additions and removals from the Gridcoin whitelist, projects can be added to or removed from the whitelist after a vote by all Gridcoin users.

Additions

Sourcefinder
https://sourcefinder.theskynet.org/duchamp/

Originally a project testing the "Duchamp" application for the already whitelisted project Pogs. Today however the project has been expanded.

"ASKAP has almost completed observations of its first ~500GB cube, and we're going to be processing it when it's done!
Running a sourcefinding application on ASKAP data hasn't been done yet, so this is going to be a world first.

While we're waiting for ASKAP to be done, we're going to be running the simulated super cube again, this time using a new sourcefinding application called SoFiA.
We're going to be looking at whether SoFiA is any better at finding sources than Duchamp is.

Once we have data from both Duchamp and SoFiA, I'll be working on cross matching the sources they found with the original sources catalogue, then we'll have a clear picture of which is the better sourcefinder.

I'm also told that there's a very high chance of a paper being written on the comparison between Duchamp and SoFiA as sourcefinders, so I'll be sure to keep you all up to date if I hear any more about it."

Xansons for COD
http://xansons4cod.com/xansons4cod/

Xansons is now out of Alpha and is generating data. The project has recently released the source code available at https://gitlab.com/vsnever/xansons_boinc

The purpose of Xansons is:
"XANSONS for COD is a research project aimed to create an open access database of simulated x-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns for nanocrystalline phase of the materials presented in the Crystallography Open Database (COD)."

"This project uses original open source (GPLv3 license) software XaNSoNS (X-ray and Neutron Scattering on Nanoscale Structures) to simulate the diffraction patterns on CPU and GPU."

"XANSONS for COD is a privately managed BOINC project supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (project RFBR #15-07-07901-a)."

Enigma@Home
http://www.enigmaathome.net/

Originally the purpose of Enigma was to crack three World War 2 German U-Boat messages. This task was successfully completed some time ago.

Today Enigma is cracking further WW2 Enigma messages that have been found, currently it is cracking the fifth message.

My main motivation for suggesting Enigma for the whitelist is that a poll was running when the voting issues surfaced, to give the project a fair shot I believe the poll should be Re-run.

Removals
Sztaki Desktop Grid
http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/szdg/

Sztaki is a project running apps for the Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Systems at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary.

Unfortunately Sztaki does not mantain a queue of work making them seem to be inactive, however the project does generate work but only hands this out to a lmited sub-set of users who have contributed in the past. This means new users cannot join the project and compete with the established crunchers.

For this reason I believe Sztaki should be removed from the Whitelist.

Leiden Classical Desktop
http://boinc.gorlaeus.net/

Leiden is run by (unsurprisingly) Leiden University to process data for student projects, unfortunately there is very little information on what is actually being worked on.

The Leiden Classical project is starting to wind down and they have started to restrict sign-ups which will cause problems for new crunchers, there is also very little communication from the project on the projects message boards.

"Due to spammers automatically creating accounts, account creation can and will be disabled at our discretion. Furthermore, this project is reaching its ending phase probably somewere in 2018. This means as long as the software runs and the OS receives updates (EOL 2020), the project will be maintained, but automatic work creation will stop for sure."

Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings. If you have found this post useful please consider upvoting, resteeming and/or following me.

I agree with these changes. Though the new additions will need to meet our security requirements (maybe they already do, idk).

Sourcefinder should be ok as it is run by Skynet the same as Pogs.

Enigma had a poll before the voting issues, so I assume it passed muster then.

I don't know about Xansons as I dont know the requirements. It doesn't seem to be HTTPS but the Sourcecode has been released.

I know POGS was whitelisted before they had https, but maybe we're more strict now. I also don't know the requirements. They're probably buried somewhere in the main forums, but I'm too lazy to dig :-)

This topic will be discussed at this Saturday's Gridcoin hangout. I posted a comment, basically copy/pasting your original comment from pepper's post. I'll give you the proceeds of that comment, if it happens to get upvoted.

Nice informative post. I'm Also gridcoin supporter. Would be awesome to crack some of those WW2 messages!

join plz #gridcoin on freenode

Hi, I'm also apart of Gridcoin, what's freenode?

not the first. i wish all boinc projects works with us . plz come together, letz make the world littlebit better

"#gridcoin is life"

Nice post, it is important to keep Gridcoin BOINC whitelist updated by adding new promising projects and removing those that do not provide enough work units to maintain the equilibrium.

I won't vote a project without SSL into the whitelist, but the others look good. It's be great to get some feedback from the sztaki & leiden admins :/

They should come talk on the hangouts.
