Gridcoin Community Hangout #012

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings, without him the released hangout recordings would be slow and of poor quality.

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

010 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topic suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

How are this post's rewards distributed?

50% of author rewards are liquid SBD, we will distribute 10% to myself and @peppernrino for providing resources and editing work, the other 90% will be distributed to those who attended hangouts (we may break this down further to only those who talked in the future, this is still to be worked out!).

We will also be distributing GRC onto attendees/speakers in the future, if you plan on attending, RSVP and provide your GR C address, otherwise payments may be delayed/skipped!

CM, I would like if we could have a discussion about the 'hierarchy' of Gridcoin.

I'm sure that many of the members/researchers in Gridcoin, including myself, have little or no idea who the foundation members are and what their intrinsic powers might be.

I have mentioned before that I believe we should have a 'Road Map' detailing our present and future plans for Gridcoin.
I believe that this would assist members/researchers who have the skills, which match certain 'Road Map' objectives, to commit to helping to secure those objectives.
The 'Road Map' would also allow the members/researchers to measure Gridcoin's progress in a tangible manner.

I know that members/researchers all have their own day to day lives to think about as their first priority.
In many cases members/researchers are involved here as 'hobbyists' and will not want to commit an inordinate amount of time (sweat equity) to this ongoing project.
However, if Gridcoin is to endure and succeed, as we all wish it to, I feel it's important to formalise and create groups/commitees which are responsible for designated or agreed functions.
These designated or agreed functions should suit their skill sets and the amount of time they are able/willing to commit to the designated or agreed functions.
I know that this might seem like a lot of work but in the long run I'm sure you will agree that "Failing to plan is planning to fail".

Ultimately, Gridcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency - there is no company behind it, it's a collective experiment supported by volunteers.

You could say that those with authority/power within the Gridcoin network are:

  • Rob due to github commit access and lead development.
  • Team founders due to their admin powers over team 'Gridcoin' on each project.
  • Rob + RTMoney for ultimate control over the Neural Network whitelist and beacon mechanism (should be decentralized).
  • Rob with access to foundation funds (we could multi-sig/escrow in the future).
  • Users who build packages for various operating systems (Caraka for debian, Marix for RPM (fedora, redhat), Peppernrino for Bild/portable packages, etc.

Outside of the network, within the community those that hold a higher 'status' are:

  • Individuals who run BOINC/Gridcoin related services (block explorers, statistics websites, pools, etc).
  • Individuals who build packages (mentioned above)
  • Long term users

A roadmap is good for core client development, everything else is independent projects created by the community & up to them where they take their own projects. A core client roadmap requires Rob's input on the matter - let's create a cryptocointalk thread on this matter. Be aware that not everyone shares the same view on a future roadmap.

What do you have in mind for organization? Loomio? (Or something similar?)

If people are being asked to dedicate their time to Gridcoin they should be somewhat reimbursed through the Gridcoin foundation expense/campaign system.

If you intend to attend, please reply to this post with your GRC address. Thanks.

Continuing to discuss the 2017 BOINC Workshop:

Hi,

So the steem thread raised approx $24 in liquid Steem Backed Dollars, do you want me to continue raising funds on Steem?

I spoke during episode #177 of the BeyondBitcoin hangouts about the 2017 workshop: https://steemit.com/beyondbitcoin/@rubellitefae/e177-beyond-bitcoin-peerplays-gridcoin-and-steemit-city

The Gridcoin community has been discussing the 2017 workshop in episodes 10 & 11, but they have yet to be released (I'll notify you once they do).

We were thinking that 'Zurich, Switzerland' meets your criteria?

Think we could get event sponsorship by large companies? (WCG == IBM, etc).

In the mean time, the Gridcoin community holds hangouts (https://soundcloud.com/gridcoin-community-hangouts/) on Saturdays (next is 22nd Oct @ 9PM GMT: https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@cm-steem/gridcoin-community-hangout-012-rsvp-and-suggest-topics ) the entire BOINC community is welcome to attend (we discuss GRC, BOINC, Cryptocurrency, etc).

What do you think about regular local meetups via https://www.meetup.com/ ? That way people could attend a meeting in their city/state regularly, could be good for neworking & key speakers (such as yourself) could participate via teleconference rather than having to fly around the world.

Best regards,

CM.

We could also discuss the 2 foundation expenses currently going.

MindModeling hasn't had WUs for ~a month. Should it be removed from the whitelist until it has WUs again?

Good question!

https://mindmodeling.org/server_status.php

It's a shame to remove a project, but yeah if there's been no work in a month then it's a burden on GRC's reward mechanaism & its removal is probably a good idea. We could vote it back in when it becomes active again.

In the future, we could investigate improving the DPOR mechanism to account for inactive BOINC projects: https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/38341-brainstorming-gridcoin-dpor-distributed-proof-of-research-removing-the-load-off-of-netsoft/page-2

Removing any project from the our whitelist is a great shame.
I honestly don't know much about mindmodeling .org but maybe we could find out what difficulties they are having before we put it to the vote.

great hangout this week!
