Gridcoin Community Hangout #007

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings, without him the released hangout recordings would be slow and of poor quality.

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

The first 3 hangouts lasted 2.5 to 3 hours, with a bit of time beforehand and a few hours of unrecorded hangout time afterwards. The 4th, 5th and 6th hangouts lasted approx 1.5hrs.

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Maybe we could talk about promoting the Gridcoin Thunderclap, potential marketing strategies like forum posts and other methods . So far we have 34 supporters, but another 64 are gonna be needed. Even if we get 100, the more people we have the bigger the effect will be. So we should be aiming for the sky with this campaign.

Here are all the forums I have posted to so far to get the party going:

I'm not sure about thunderclap - it's requiring access to my Twitter account which I'm not comfortable with. I'll certainly tweet/retweet your 'thunderclapped' posts though on the 24th September.

Edit: Also, blackhatworld? Really?

Lots of social media geniuses on there! All twitter apps require that access.

Gridcoin + Bitshares.
If I have understood it correctly, we have launched a Market Pegged Asset (MPA) on Bitshares and hopefully we will soon have an OpenLedger gateway for trading on Bitshares Decentralized Exchange (DEX). However, many of Gridcoin users aren't familiar with Bitshares and I am also still learning about it . CM looks like an BTS expert to me, but there might be others on our team who are also knowledgeable about it. Would you be so kind to say a few more words about Bitshares and Gridcoin+Bitshares integration during Hangout #007?

Also, I have bought some BTS myself (it looks undervalued to me at present prices but don't trust my judgment on it). I have also installed their Bitshares2-light wallet. As a BTS holder, is there any way I can support this GRC+BTS integration? Through voting proxies, workers, witnesses...? I am still unfamiliar with all technical aspects of BTS, so I apologize if I have phrased this post poorly.

https://steemit.com/bitshares/@rok-sivante/what-you-need-to-know-about-bitshares-a-newbie-s-map-to-navigating-the-platform-tech-and-community

The above post should provide a significant amount of reading on BTS - the BTS 101 ebook is pretty good.

At the moment, there is no proxies/workers to vote for, but you can certainly vote for witnesses that provide the Gridcoin MPA price feeds: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,22733.0.html

Well, it took me good 15 minutes to find those witnesses :)
So for anyone else who is also unfamiliar with BTS, they are delegate.ihashfury and wackou, as listed here: https://cryptofresh.com/a/GRIDCOIN

I believe we may have triggered a 'black swan' event with the GRIDCOIN MPA last thursday: https://cryptofresh.com/a/GRIDCOIN

With our forced settlement time being 7 days, perhaps this is why the price feeds haven't changed?

Black Swans - Extreme Market Conditions

All guarantees of SmartCoins are subject to the caveat that a SmartCoin can never be worth more than the collateral backing the least-collateralized short position. In normal market conditions, the value of the collateral is always more than sufficient, but, from time to time, markets can rapidly revalue the collateral. If this revaluation happens faster than the short positions can be forced to cover, then all SmartCoins are liquidated at the exchange rate of the least collateralized short position. This is similar to an insolvent bank converting its deposits to equity.
