Gridcoin Community Hangout #014

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings! Follow him on Steem! :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

013 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topic suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

How are this post's rewards distributed?

50% of author rewards are liquid SBD, we may distribute these liquid SBD funds to attendees/speakers in the near future - we need to discuss this as a community. If you wish to receive steem rewards then you need to post to this thread your intent to attend. (Failure to post will potentially lead to reward delay).

We will also be distributing GRC onto attendees/speakers in the future, if you plan on attending, RSVP and provide your GR C address, otherwise payments may be delayed/skipped!

I believe that this is an extremely important topic of discussion for many reasons, but mainly because this 'incident' certainly caused a lot of concern and consternation within the community.

This topic brings to the fore again, our community's communication difficulties.

Maybe a DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan) is already in place and if there is, the community must be made aware of it as soon as possible.

Should there be no DRP already in place, I propose the creation of some form of DRP to be initiated or triggered in the event that an 'incident' happens.

We need to create a robust system for dealing with these inevitably chaotic episodes and how we deal with problems of this sort in the most transparent and immediate manner.

This will strengthen Gridcoin's integrity and ethos by showing that of our community can face adversity in a cohesive and organised manner.

Formulation of a DRP (if there is not already on in place) should be discussed and implemented urgently and the DRP should be made available to all community members.

A DRP sounds like a great idea, but also a DPP (Disaster Prevention Plan) would be a great concept to discuss - perhaps utilizing a branch for testnet developments, greater testnet participation, etc.

A plan for full node security (some kind of minimum requirements?), torrent of the snapshot... is it possible to get more frequent snapshots, or snapshots by request, or is bootstrap the only way to cure that ail?

Minimum requirements for full nodes? Yeah I think that's a good idea, perhaps a 'best practices' for full node operators to ensure they aren't taken over my a malicious actor?

A torrent of the snapshot would be good for saving bandwidth from the gridcoin website and would keep the snapshot online if the gridcoin website was ddos'ed.

The bootstrap would provide proof of blockchain integrity (which isn't provided with the current official snapshot). If someone was to attempt to fork the blockchain far back we would have the bootstrap to prevent any such attempt - likewise, an updated checkpoint could improve this (though, perhaps checkpoint functionality was removed? IDK).

A bootstrap is also good for any paranoid users who prefer a slower initial sync but with added security benefits.

Getting Gridcoin added to CoinPayments:
https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/50486-should-we-get-gridcoin-integrated-into-coinpaymentsnet/
http://coinpayments.net/

Cost: Approx $700 initial fees, $350 for every 90 days if we do not have a monthly trading volume (on coinpayments) of $350.

If we're able to get $5k/month sales through coinpayments then it's well worth it, if not it could prove a drain on the foundation..

All those interested in getting Gridcoin integrated into coinpayments please reply to this suggestion.

I added a few of my better recent ideas. :)

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

There was a project a guy was starting on a thing I watched in 2014... from a Facebook app for Opinion Stage... it was called "Would you participate in a distributed sensor array?"

There was a video showing how to make an rf antenna for like $25 USD, and the idea was to have like 6 antennae placed around your yard, as well as being attached to a distributed global network of such... and together you would monitor the radio and other waves and their distribution.

I wonder if he was "silenced".

Fuck it. I say let's get it going again. :)

I have doubts that he was 'silenced', but it sounds quite cool. How would such a projects 'work units' work though?

What specific ranges would you be looking for? Is this type of captured data available elsewhere for processing? (competitors if this is a commercial project).

How much data would this be generating?

What would we do with this type of data? Perhaps allow for its redistribution for a fee and deleted after a certain period of time? Or would it be more for data analysis rather than interception of communications?

Yes. All of those things. :P

I'm not sure if it would work like a traditional BOINC project... how does Quake catcher work?

As for the ranges we would be looking for, all of them. Any that are possible to pick up. I think we'll get an idea of what types of transmissions are super common or anomalies, as well as how thick they are in certain areas. We might put the results against some kind of health charting (depression, road rage, etc), to monitor the effects of common waves on our bodies/psyche?

It could also act as a secondary project to the SIP communication mesh network, if said network was hosted on wifi boxes or something like that, to help leverage the distribution of bandwidth.

We should make a distributed SIP-style burst communication mesh network for encrypted communications.

...did i use enough buzzwords?

The idea is to have people act as servers for a ZRTP-encrypted free phone network, that you can't record, because it isn't coming from one source.

Obviously some kinks to work out, but worth doing.

Rewarding content-hosting on webtorrent.io... or raining on people who operate stable nodes... we've discussed some of these ideas before. :)
