My first 9 Months staking with Gridcoin.
Since starting with Gridcoin in March 2018 I have noticed that the most common question we newbies have with regard to staking Gridcoins (solo mining) is: "How many Gridcoins do I need to have in my wallet to stake a block and gain my research rewards?"
The short answer is: "It depends". One of the Biggest factor is CoinWeight in your Wallet. The second biggest factor is LUCK.

When I first started in March all I heard was that you need ~2000 GRC to stake regularly.
With the introduction of Constant Block Rewards (mid November) I started hearing that you needed ~10000 GRC to stake regularly.
.....but wait, "What is regularly?" aaaaahhhhh, that's where luck plays into things.
I've recently been reading about people who have far greater than 10K GRC and "...haven't staked in a month"
So, with all the calculations and rules of thumbs that you will read about it mostly comes down to LUCK.
...Or at least that what it seems like for me over the last 9 months.
Below is a graph of my first 9 months staking with Gridcoin.
It shows the total GRC I have in my wallet by date with Letters indicating when I staked a block. Table shows the exact data when I staked the blocks.
Yes, I got more LUCKY with more GRC in my wallet, but I did stake with 370GRC. (diff. was low)
Q:"Is it impossible to stake today with a low balance?"
A:"No, it is just improbable"
I staked 3 times in 4 days with about 4500GRC

Right Now, my wallet shows Estimated Time To Stake is 15 days with a CoinWeight of 7480 and difficulty of 11.
Will it be 15 days?, or 30 days?, or Tomorrow?
I dunno, but i'm feeling lucky!
In case anyone is wondering, I just staked again. 10.7 days after my Dec 23,2018 stake. Difficulty was 9.8 and the current ETTS from the wallet is 16 days with a coin weight of 5500GRC.
I'm still feeling lucky! ;-)

it's no called luck , it depends on the amount of wallet/gridcoinresearchd clients online and their holdings and packed into " difficulty " as you see on the client screen just under " block ". you can use 1 of the sites to track or code an app or if you are lucky someone will share the current one many of us use to watch each block. maybe ill insert a screen shot with 25 blocks and the diff levels being low and spiking vs the 8.0-11.0 current values. Gridcoin caters to whales and tries to force the rest to use the pool... its a sham and you can earn more than 10grc for CBR as i see as high as 240 if you take advantage of what wasn't voted on for CBR but is there to feed the whales aka the people whom are forced onto us labeled " trusted community members " go figure. Gridcoin is DEAD why do you think the original creator just washed his hands of 80,000,000GRC after being pushed out of ongoing development. The value has tanked so far it's really not worth the text or social media wasted on it daily and the time it took to write this. btw , not new going on 2 1/2 years.
You absolutely cannot earn more than 10 GRC CBR per block staked. This is set in the code. There are no exceptions. Rob left because he wanted to take GRC in the direction of masternodes. The rest of the community did not. We will see how the masternodes project plays out with Biblepay.
I think the many active Gridcoin community members and the devs would disagree with you. The coin is not dead at all. There is a lot of activity.
